Sutton were on equal terms as far as territory was concerned in the first half but were behind through a spectacular goal from Leon Butchmore after 19 minutes.Shooting from a full 30 yards giving Martini no chance. A second half goal from Braintree and a rejected penalty appeal sealed Sutton's fate. Sutton's closest first half effort came from Arkwright's header. Chris Boothe also had a 20 yard shot go just over the bar. Half time saw Sutton go in feeling they had every chance to get something from the game.

It was not to be , 3 minutes into the second half Arkwright conceded a needless handball 25 yards out  , Martini blocked the free kick but Simpson responded to the rebound to put Braintree two up. Sutton could have been 3 down when Rienold chipped from 20 yards. Sutton felt they had a good claim for a penalty when Matt Fowler was brought down in the box. Sutton pushed forward and were left light at the back. In the 67th minute Simpson's low cross was put in by Goodsmore. Martini then had to make a great save following a poor back pass.
