SUTTON UTD 3 BOREHAM WOOD 2
Another highly entertaining afternoon at Gander Green Lane was given a thrilling conclusion on Saturday when Nick Bailey rounded off an outstanding individual display with a spectacular goal two minutes from time that gave Sutton a third successive league win. For the second week running they conceded an early goal but came back to lead at half time, but this time that lead evaporated within three minutes of the start of the second half and despite concerted attacks it seemed as though U's would have to settle for a point when Bailey threw himself at a cross from former youth team colleague Matt Gray and powered his header in to the net. It was quite an afternoon for players whose promise has come to light in U's youth team, as the main thorn in their side was Scott Forrester, of whom great things were expected when he broke into U's Conference team as a 17 year old. His career hasn't quite made the expected progress, although he is still only 20 and scored two good goals on Saturday to keep a struggling Boreham Wood side in the hunt right to the end. His first came in the 9th minute to rock Sutton back on their heels, and was a firm diving header in to Andy Pape's left hand corner from a right wing cross that, ironically, deflected off Bailey to arrive at a nice height and pace for the finish. As against Hitchin, though, U's overcame this poor start, although again they looked happier going forward than in defence. Gray almost equalised when he escaped everyone to meet Danny Bolt's corner but failed to make proper contact, but in the 25th minute the two combined from a corner again. Bolt played this one short to Gray, who turned superbly on the byline and put in a cross that was headed out to Ryan Palmer. He worked a shooting position before firing through a crowd of players, the ball taking a couple of deflections on its way in. Eight minutes later U's were in front, Lee Harvey's mistake allowing Matt Fowler to burst through on the right of the penalty area before unselfishly setting up Bolt, who unmarked and with his left foot was never going to miss from 15 yards. Adam Parker, making his Boreham Wood debut, saw a 25 yard shot immediately turned aside by Pape at full stretch, while Fowler's snap shot at the other end was saved by Noel Imber. Three minutes after half time, though, Forrester showed good control to bring down a through ball, turn past Palmer and fire low in to Pape's right hand corner. Sutton should have been straight back in front, Fowler's pass putting Mark Watson clear although he looked offside. Imber came out to meet him, but shouldn't really have been given the chance that he had to save with his legs. For the next ten minutes it could have gone either way. Palmer blocked a Parker shot on the line after Dominic Grime had caught U's napping at a free kick to cross from the right, then it was the visitors' turn to doze as Scott Corbett found Bolt with a quickly taken free kick. 25 yards out, the result was predictable but Imber managed, albeit unconvincingly, to push the shot over the bar. He also saved well from Gray, while Bailey, who turned up in all parts of the pitch and at times in the second half seemed to fancy taking Boreham Wood on single handed, hit the side netting from 20 yards after Bolt had pulled a corner back to him. Gray volleyed inches wide at full stretch from a glorious pass in from Bailey, but when the 18 year olds combined again two minutes from time it was decisive. Watson played his part, holding the ball up well before laying it wide to Gray, and his first time cross was thundered in by Bailey, whose late run had completely escaped the visiting defenders.
