CHESHAM UTD 2 SUTTON UTD 3
After Extra Time-Score at 90 minutes 1-1
Report by Tony Dolbear

Given the problems surrounding this tie already, it was predictable that settling it might be a drawn out affair and so the need to play extra time when the sides met again at The Meadow on Tuesday was scarcely a surprise. For a while a replay looked likely, but ultimately it was Sutton who prevailed in a quickfire burst of goals early in the second extra period to go through. It was a richly deserved victory for U's, who played the better football throughout and, given an extra five minutes in normal time might well have won it then. It wasn't until two minutes after the change round in extra time, though, that Scott Corbett finally put them in front, and even then nothing was simple as Tony Fontanelle equalised within a minute only for Matt Gray, probably the night's outstanding performer, to also prove the match winner just three minutes later. The early stages of the game gave little hint of the exciting finish and chances were scarce. Gray and Matt Fowler sent shots just wide for U's, while James Bent put Chesham's best chance in to the side netting, and apart from an early booking for Lewis Gonsalves that was it as regards noteworthy moments before half time. Within 25 seconds of the restart, though, the deadlock was broken as substitute Walid Matata, brought on at the interval, made a dramatic impact, scoring with his first touch after a mix up between Gonsalves and Andy Pape. That was one of two changes that the home side made at half time, the other seeing Peter Thorne replace Delroy Preddie in goal, and U's were given hope of an immediate recovery as the replacement keeper, who had conceded five at Kingstonian in his only previous senior appearance, showed early signs of nerves. U's could have had a penalty when Fowler seemed to be bundled over as he tried to reach a Danny Bolt cross inside the six yard box, but he did have a well deserved goal soon afterwards when Eddie Akuamoah ran on to Mike Hollands' pass and squared the ball across goal to give Fowler a simple finish. With Gray giving the home defence an increasingly torrid time, U's looked the likelier winners from that point, even after the departure of the lively Fowler with what they will hope was a minor thigh strain, although with Gray receiving little protection from referee Carl Henry it was especially frustrating when he pulled out a yellow card for a mistimed tackle by Nick Bailey. Inside the last five minutes they could have settled things, but Thorne belied his earlier uncertainty by saving a low shot from Bolt, and clinging on well as Bailey looked for the rebound. Gonsalves headed a Bolt corner over the top, and Gray ended a typically incisive run with a fierce shot that Thorne tipped away. The end of normal time rather took the wind out of U's sails, and although Gray had another effort deflected wide they also had to deal with a couple of scrambles inside their six yard box. At the start of the second period Matata missed a glorious chance to put Chesham ahead when he went clear but shot wide as Pape came out, and was made to pay a minute later when Bailey did well on the right of the area before thumping in a shot that this time Thorne couldn't hold, and Corbett volleyed in the rebound. Within a minute, though, Fontanelle fired in a shot from the left that deflected past Pape and the replay looked back on the cards, but then Bailey was put through on the left and squared the ball across goal for Gray to turn it high in to the net. Even then U's had a scare when Pape dropped a cross shot from Steve Sinclair and was rescued by Danny Brooker's interception in the six yard box, but Bolt and Corbett both sent shots just too high as U's claimed an eighth consecutive victory.
