Saturday, 2nd November 2002: FA Trophy 1st Round
SUTTON UNITED (1) 2 HARROW BORO' (0) 1
By Lyall Reynolds

Following four straight defeats, it was important that United got back to winning ways against Harrow Borough, a team they beat three-nil in the league earlier in the season. As the rain poured, it was clear that both sides were intent on launching their cup run and it was Sutton who took the early initiative. Danny Bolt playing through Matt Fowler whose shot forced a good save from Karamoko but on-rushing Mark Watson was unable to turn the ball in from the tightest of angles. Soon after, a cross from Dave Timothy, who later left the field with a hamstring injury, saw the 'keeper punch clear as far as Lewis Gonsalves whose low-driven shot was held well. The first real scare for Sutton saw Ryan Palmer's back-pass fall short and Pape make a brave save at the feet of the pacy forward. Good use of the flanks created another opening as the Harrow forward beat Pape and saw his shot clip the post and go wide; it was one of few real chances for the Boro attackers. With the game still deadlocked after thirty-four minutes, Sutton won a free-kick twenty-five yards out. Scott Corbett sent a low, fast curling ball towards the far post and Karamoko, not expecting a shot, dived late and was unable to reach the ball before it went in off the post to give United a half-time lead.
Harrow came out the stronger of the two sides in the second half and a period of sustained pressure and successive corners, eventually saw Pat Gavin, unmarked at the back post, side-foot a volley into the U's net. Sutton reacted positively and tried to create a decisive opening. The pressure eventually told. Bolt, collecting the ball in the area, shot firmly towards the far corner. His effort was half-saved, and as Fowler followed in, the referee acknowledged the linesman's flag and awarded Sutton a second goal, adjudging Bolt's effort to have crossed the line. With fifteen minutes to go, Harrow were reduced to ten men. Scott Corbett and John Lawford both slid in for a loose ball on the touchline. Corbett played the ball a fraction before Lawford's two-footed attempt and when the resultant melee died down, Lawford was dismissed for the tackle. Sutton then played with dominance and a confidence not seen in recent weeks, as Bolt dragged a shot wide and Fowler's clever flick on saw Watson miss a relatively easy chance, unchallenged, from only six-yards. The final whistle brought relief and joy to United's fans who have seen the club's form dip of late. United's assistant boss, Tony Rains, later agreed with Harrow's manager, Edwin Stein, that though Boro' shaded possession, Sutton created more chances. The reward for the victory is an away trip to Basingstoke in the second round.
