The teacher or student (A) reads a word aloud without telling whether the vowel sound is 'short' (first column) or 'long' (second column). Student (B) says whether it is 'short' or 'long'. A variation is for the teacher or Student (B) to read the same word aloud twice or else the two contrasting words. Student (A) says whether the words are 'the same' or 'different'.
