Car usage has risen 42 % in the last 10 years. Car exhaust fumes are strongly linked to asthma.
One in 6 children in Brighton now suffer from asthma.
A recent report in The New Scientist suggests that around 10,000 people die each year due to exhaust fumes.

Since the 1960s, Brighton's buses have been caught in a vicious circle of competition from the motor car, increasing fares and poor time-keeping and therefore an even greater increase in private motoring.
The high level of car usage has brought many parts of Brighton to a standstill and poses significant health problems.
Attempted solutions include Park & Ride services and encouraging residents to share their cars. There have also been attempts to provide cycle lanes in many parts of the town and special bus lanes have been provided to speed up public transport.
