PHRASAL VERBS - Living in Brighton

Kimi: Would you like to stay in Brighton after you've finished your course?

Eiji: I quite like it here, but if it goes on raining all the time, I should prefer to get away to a hot country!

Kimi: But if your father paid for you, surely you wouldn't turn down the opportunity to study at Sussex University.

Eiji: Do you really think my father is so rich? If he gave me all that money my family would have to cut back on food and clothes!

Kimi: How much money does your father bring in?

Eiji: Not so much as you think!

Kimi: What about your sister.....the one who is always buying clothes. Can't she take up a less expensive hobby?

Eiji: Try keeping my sister out of fashion shops! She would go crazy! She likes to keep up a high standard of dress. In any case, she pays for herself.

Kimi: Well, how about your mother..... Can't she put off buying all those plants for the garden?

Eiji: No, ...... she loves plants. Nobody could stop her from carrying out her plans for the garden!

Kimi: Perhaps somebody could stop your brother. After all, building is an expensive hobby. Must he really put up a summer house?

Eiji: Yes, really! And he can't put it off, because the government may soon bring in planning restrictions. He must build it quickly. He doesn't want to take on the planning authorities.

Kimi: But, why does your family need a summer house? Do you really have to put up so many visitors?

Eiji: Perhaps not..... but anyway.... I don't want to live in Brighton. Without Japanese friends, food and culture, I think I'd feel very cut off.

Kimi: Those are a few disadvantages, but let me put over the advantages of staying here. Think how good your English would be after a year in this horrible town!
