James (V, King of Scotland 1513-1542) James V was the son of James IV, king of Scotland, who died at the battle of Flodden in 1513. James V died at the end of 1542 supposedly due to the shock of his army's defeat by the English at Solway Moss. James V left a daughter. Mary, as heir to the Scottish throne.

1542 Nov 24 - Battle of Solway Moss A terrible defeat for the Scottish when they were overrun by a much smaller force of English troops led by the duke of Norfolk. Several high-worth Scottish prisoners were taken and transported to the Tower of London for future ransom. The shock of the defeat is supposed to have been so great for the Scottish king, James V, that he died just a few weeks later.
