Sunday 16th April 2000, a day that will go down in history, a day that a lone Tommy with a Boyes anti-tank rifle saw off an entire Africa Korps armoured car platoon single handedly. This heroic Tommy was part of a 20mm World War II western desert game that we played on our latest open day. The Axis side spent most of the morning advancing with their Panzers and wondering where their infantry had got to. The Allied side had the opposite problem, plenty of infantry but where were had all those tanks gone. After the loss of their armoured cars to the fearsome new anti-tank weapon the British had used, the Axis side was less inclined to advance with their tanks until the infantry arrived. The game was played while listening to a tape of early 1940s music and I least had some bully beef sandwiches.
