Tring Wargames Club

Halton 2000

The morning started with a relaxed feeling, until I looked at the clock & realised I was supposed to have picked up Dave 10 minutes ago. I was in the car 10 minutes later, washed and in panic. ( have you ever tried brushing your teeth & wiping your bum at the same time "whats the difference you may say" but its something you don`t want to get wrong - especially after the first application of brush and paper).

I arrived at Daves and picked up the Armada. Luckily all terrain & my stuff had been packed the night before. We arrived at the airfield by 08:30 where we met Russall. The set up took only some 25 minutes and then we were off.

The turn out for wargames was low. Dunstable were putting on a Warhammer type game, Graham had his excellent late Roman terrain & figures, the plastic boys were there with Waterloo and then there was us.

The day was quite busy however the attendance did not seem as heavy as usual. Then disaster struck, my wife phoned & said she had broken her ankle - I had to rush off leaving Dave & Russall in charge (Dave looking like a lost Puppy worrying how he would get home).

At home I managed to convince her along with the neighbors that she should wait until the evening for the swelling to go down & then go to casualty - it worked. Back to the show 2 hours later.

The show itself had been disappointing for wargamers, no specialist book stalls, only the usual plastic kits & nothing worth mentioning. I could see that Russall was worried, he hadn't spent any money & was desperately searching the stalls. While away the boys had done an excellent job with the crowd, all the leaflets had gone and we were having fun just talking to the public. Many of the comments reflected our enthusiasm although Dave was criticised for the polished dome on the top of his head being pink instead of metal (only joking).

Russall worked well on the photography and they should turn out very nice. Another coup was that he has re-instigated communication with the Dunstable club where promises of swapping visits is on the cards.

I think one of the successes of the demo was the topic, not only was is the anniversary the next weekend but also the BBC program on British History had been on that Wednesday.

The show ended with our demo winning and a nice trip home and a 3 hour wait in casualty.
