Blaze to Retire Cooper Shirt

The Coventry Blaze ice hockey team are pleased to announce that they will be officially "retiring" the number 55 shirt worn by legendary defenceman Stephen Cooper.

Cooper, a Great Britain stalwart for many years, hung up his skates at the end of last season after one of the most illustrious careers in British hockey. Cooper joined Blaze during season 2000-2001 from Hull Thunder. The Durham junior started his career with his home town Wasps before moving on to play for Cardiff Devils for six years. A move to Manchester to join the Storm at the start of the SuperLeague era was followed by stints at Newcastle and Nottingham before his decision to move to the BNL at Hull at the start of the 2000-01 season.

Blaze will officially retire the number before their home game, at the Skydome Arena, on Sunday 22nd September, against one of Cooper's former teams, the Cardiff Devils.

Head Coach Paul Thompson confirmed "Although Coops was only with us for a season and a half he made a huge impact, as he has everywhere he's played throughout his career. He's been a rock in our defence that has been nigh on impossible to replace. We have taken the decision to retire #55, not just in recognition of his contribution to hockey in Coventry, but to honour him for his services to hockey in Britain generally. No one could deserve this more than Stephen!"

Cooper, who will be at the game to see the retirement ceremony, is said to be honoured at the prospect.
