On this page you will find some interesting, and perhaps not so interesting, facts about the Castle that do not really fit on any of the other pages on the site. 

The great English landscape painter William Turner drew a couple of sketches of Whittington Castle in 1794 whilst touring the country. These are part of the Turner collection held by the Tate Gallery and can be viewed online here.
William Lloyd, who restored the gatehouse, married the daughter of the Captain (at Trafalgar) of the Fighting Temeraire.
The Great Western Railway Castle class locomotive series included 5021 - Whittington Castle. Built August 1932. First shed allocation Plymouth Laira. August 1950 and March 1959 shed allocations Plymouth Laira. Last shed allocation Cardiff Canton. Withdrawn September 1962. Scrapped at Cashmore's, Newport.
Elizabeth Chadwicks book about the Fitzwarines and Whittington Castle - Lords of the White Castle, was shortlisted for the Parker Romantic Novel of the Year in 2002. Find out more about Elixabeth Chadwick at her website here.
The name of Whittington and Whittington Castle is derived  from the Welsh "Drev Wen" meaning White Town. The village was recorded in the Doomesday Book as Whititone. This name is thought to have originated because of the bloom of white flowers which flourished in the marshy area around the Castle.
