The Trust has applied under the National Lottery "Awards for All" scheme for funding to purchase grounds maintenance equipment. If successful the Trust proposes to purchase heavy duty mowing and strimming equipment and to provide training to volunteers willing to help maintain the Castle grounds.

The Trust has recently completed long and protracted negotiations with the Owners of Whittington Castle over the terms for acquisition. To summarise, the original asking price was £95,000, which turned out to be considerably higher than the valuations obtained by the Trust during the course of the feasibility study. Whittington Castle Preservation Trust was reluctant to publish a final report that might have concluded that a community-based project was not viable whilst there was still a chance of reaching a compromise with the Owners. I am pleased to say that the Owners recently offered major concessions in order to encourage the Trust to continue towards acquisition. This included reducing the asking price to £20,000 for a 99-year lease. The Trusts view is that the project is now viable and the final feasibility study report now reflects this.
