Monnow Valley Fisheries
A fishing retreat on the border between England and Wales.
Set amongst 400 acres of the spectacular Monnow Valley Estate, this fine Manor House was used as a fishing and country club in the 1950s. Just a few miles upstream from the historic Welsh town of Monmouth this part of the Monnow Valley was once a popular fishing retreat.
One of the main tributaries of the River Wye, the River Monnow forms the border between England and Wales along much of its length and had achieved the reputation of "one of the best trout streams in south Britain". In recent years the river has undergone a restoration project aimed at improving the riverside habit and increasing its capability to support its wild fish population. Now under new ownership the Monnow Valley Fisheries offers 1 mile of fantastic coarse and fly fishing for grayling, trout and chub on the lower reaches of the River Monnow.
The Manor house itself offers bed and breakfast with 6 bedrooms comprising 3 doubles (2 with en-suite), 3 twins (2 with en-suite), large communal bathroom with shower and Victorian bath and 2 shower rooms. Facilities include in-room TVs and telephones, Sky Plus, DVD and VHS players, Playstation 2 and X-Box, wireless broadband access and internet work stations (mac & pc). Recreation facilities include Pub pool table, table tennis tables, dart board, Multi-gym, cross trainer and exercise bike. If you prefer something a little less energetic you can relax beside the real log fires or stroll around the 3 acre garden. Prices from £25 per person per night.
The area is renowned for its outdoor activities and mountain biking, quad-biking, caving, clay pigeon shooting, horse riding, canoeing and rock climbing can all be arranged locally. Some of the finest golf courses in the UK are on the doorstep with preferential rates available at The Rolls of Monmouth, Celtic Manor (home to 2010 Ryder Cup), Monmouth Golf Club, Forest Hills and St. Pierre Golf and Country Club.
As well as being a former Country Club one end of the house has been converted into a recording studio, and since the 1970s, rock legends such as Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne, Oasis and Queen have written, rehearsed and recorded some of their most famous tracks here.
