HEADLINE: James Baker may go to Western Sahara as special envoy: UN
DATELINE: UNITED NATIONS, March 4
Former US Secretary of State James Baker may be appointed as UN special envoy to Western Sahara, a UN spokesman said on Tuesday.
"I can confirm that that name is being considered, that consultations to that effect have taken place and that more consultations on that will take place," said spokesman Juan Carlos Brandt, adding an announcement would be made "shortly."
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said on Friday he saw "the possibility of a new initiative" to solve the political impasse in Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony over which Morocco claims sovereignty and where the Polisario Front is seeking independent statehood.
