The island is at the south eastern side of the Cycladic group in the Aegean, and is about 64 nautical miles north of Crete.
It has an area of 72 sq. km. and has a population of around 10500
Although thought of as a single island, Santorini is really five, Thira, Thirasia, Kameni Palea, Nea Kameni. and Aspronisi.
Prior to 1645 BC this was one island, "Stroggili", with an active volcano in the middle.
Around 1500 BC, the volcano erupted, a huge crater (or Caldera ) was created, then the sea flooded in and the three modern islands remained. It is estimate that a tidal wave about 100 m high resulted from this eruption; this tidal wave did catastrophic damage to the north coast of Crete.
