Teaching the Great War
Lesson 2 : 12th September Period 3&4
Topic : the Causes of the War
This lesson was a review of the causes of the war and the information that pupils have
already covered in Year 9 (short memories) !

Part of the lesson was spent discussing the nations within Europe and what 'we' think of them as a group (we also had a little grape fruit and cheese tasting session to remind us of the benefits of contact with Europe)

The class then completed the map below filling in the relevant names and 'shading' the
opposing sides in the conflict

This is a very simple exercise that illustrates the problems facing Germany in any war and this was highlighted in the discussions that took place (some excellent points were made by the class including the comment that Germany could be 'stabbed in the back' if it made war on either France or Russia)

Short notes tracing the 'road to war' (from Sarajevo to the French declaration of war) were copied down from the blackboard

The lesson finished with an extract from a BBC school's programme
