Albert Edwin Penfold
was Rifleman 474018 in the London Regiment, 12th (County of London) Battalion (The Rangers). He was formerly G/9077 of the 3rd Royal Sussex Regiment. Albert enlisted in Horsham but according the Soldiers Died CD ROM he lived in Hawley which must mean Horley. He was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme on 7th October 1916 and has no grave but his name appears on the Thiepval Memorial on Pier and Face 9C. Albert was the son of John and Emily Penfold of Tweed Cottage,  Ifield.

Philip George Penfold was Private 251676 in the Durham Light Infantry, 20th Battalion. He was born in Charlwood, Surrey and lived in Crawley. Philip was killed in action on 21st September 1917 aged 37. He has no grave but his name appears on panel 128-131 and 162 and 162A in Tyne Cot Cemetery near Ypres. Philip was the son of William Penfold who was a gardener and lived at 149 Lowfield.

Sidney James Rapley was Private TR/10/161577 in the Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment), 53rd Y.S Battalion. Sidney was born and lived in Ifield but enlisted in Brighton. He died at home on 4th November 1918 aged just 18. Sidney was the son of William and Clara Rapley of Merton Cottage, Ifield. His grave can be found in the Ifield Churchyard.

William George Scutt
was Private G/2389 in the Royal Sussex Regiment, 8th Battalion. He was born in Ifield but enlisted in Horsham. William was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme on Thursday 13th July 1916 aged 21. He has no grave but his name appears on the Thiepval Memorial on Pier and Face 7C. William was the son of the late William Scutt and Jane Scutt of County Oak, Crawley.

John Stowe was Private G/1597 in the Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment), 7th Battalion. He was born in St. Albans, lived in Ifield and enlisted in Redhill. John died on Wednesday 24th November 1915. His grave can be found at Plot 1, Row B Grave 16 in Corbie Communal Cemetery which is 15km east of Amiens. John was  the son of S. Stowe of 1, Mayfield Terrace, Ifield.

Cruiser Eldred Moore Thornton was Private G/12997 in the Royal Sussex Regiment, 3rd Battalion. He was born in Crawley and enlisted in Horsham. Cruiser died at home on Monday 19th March 1917 aged 41. His grave can be found in Ifield Churchyard but his name does not appear on the Ifield Memorial. Cruiser was the son of Cruiser and Mary Ann Thornton and husband of Alice Thornton of 11, Victoria Rd, Shoreham-by-Sea.
