DAY 4
Before travelling back to Calais for the ferry home we had the chance to explore Ypres
Some of our group shopped whilst others explored
This is St Martin's Cathedral
It was totally destroyed during the war
Soldiers were killed in the cathedral when it was shelled in 1915 and they lie buried
close by in Resevoir Cemetery
This is St George's Church
It is an English Church
It was built for those people who visited the area from England in the 1920s
In one cemetery we found the grave of two brothers
One brother died near Ypres in 1915 and the other died on the Somme in 1916
Their parents asked for them both to be buried together
The inscription on their gravestones reads :
Devoted in Life
In Death not Divided
We arrived back in school at 5pm after another round of yummy Belgian sandwiches !
