Tournai South Communal Cemetery
The city of Tournai was in German hands up until November 8th 1918
In the cemetery lie the graves of two RFC officers who are believed to be the first killed in action in 1914

2nd Lieutenant Vincent Waterfall and Lieutenant Charles George Gordon Bayly were shot down on 22nd August 1914

Brian Dickinson and I visited the cemetery on August 23rd
Fresh flowers had already been laid at the graves
The cemetery contained large numbers of war dead from 1918 and 1919 (click here); many Russian graves (click here); graves from the Second World War (click here) and an
interesting civilian grave (click here)
The cemetery visitors book shows the reasons why people visit such places in increasing numbers each year (click here)
