In this weight a lampwork and
millefiori dragonfly is set on a pink ground enhanced by single canes to each
side of the body. A garland of alternate spaced canes completes the design. The
dragonfly body is formed from gold aventurine and has eight yellow spots down
its back. The head is in red aventurine with bright orange eyes. Stretched
green canes with pink-white-yellow centres form the wings. The pink-white-green
of the canes beside the body add focus to the design.
The signature cane is set as the
lower element of the garland which contains five canes in primarily
pink-green-blue and six canes in pink-white. Having a Monart Glass label in
addition to the signature cane is quite unusual. But even more unusual is the
entry "P/W No 22" on the label.
This weight was formerly in the
Michael Parkington collection and is illustrated in Ysart Glass as plate 162.
It is also shown in Frank Andrews' site: ysartglass.com.
Yellowed glass indicates 1940s
period. UV tests confirm pre-Caithness.
