ABOUT THE ASSOCIATION ...

The Association was founded in 1948 in the aftermath of World War Two. We are a non profit making unincorporated organisation whose membership is open to all plotholders on the site - the largest in England.

LOCATION ...

Uplands Allotments is about 4 miles from the city centre (A-Z map reference Page 58 3C). By Bus: 101, 70 & 11 Outer Circle. The allotment entrance is alongside the large Uplands Public House on Oxhill Road, as the road turns the corner.

MANAGEMENT ...

Daily business is the responsibility of the Officers supported by sub-committees. All Association work is carried out by volunteers.

HOW WE ARE FUNDED ...

We are self financing, raising funds through the canteen, raffles, sale of horticultural supplies to members, tote, car boot sales, donations, membership fees, shed rents and rent commission. We receive no grant funding.

ACTIVITIES ...

  • We assist the City in the good management of our site.
  • We are actively involved in improving our environment undertaking such maintenance work as we can afford.
  • We promote allotment gardening and the growing of fresh produce.
  • We offer our clubhouse to all local, voluntary, non-profit making and community organisations.

UPLANDS ALLOTMENTS IS COMMITTED TO EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES ...

Our gardeners are from all sections of the community. The nationalities represented include English, Irish, Welsh, Polish, Ukrains, people from the Caribbean Islands, the Asian Sub-Continents and the Orient. The broad spectrum of gardening styles that co-exist at Uplands includes: organic, raised bed, cottage style, traditional rotation, permaculture and tropical. The full range of traditional fruits and vegetables are complemented with many unusual cops such as:

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AT UPLANDS ALLOTMENTS ...

At Uplands we want schools to share the gardening experience with us. For school based INSET contact Sue Fenoughty (Environmental Awareness Consultant) prior to your visit on 0121-440-4883.

BIRMINGHAM CITY COUNCIL'S GREEN ACTION PLAN ...

The Uplands works within this policy framework to improve and promote environmental awareness. With the aid of the allotments section of Parks and Nature Conservation we promote ORGANIC GARDENING and the RECYCLING of WASTE MATERIAL through composting.

Uplands Allotments are hosting a BBC TV crew on site from April through to August 2003 to film gardeners for a special edition of Gardeners World with Monty Don. They will also be filming Uplands Allotment Association's Annual Show in August 2003.
