The points at the top of the F2 chart are very close indeed, see who has what. The next edition of the mag. will be out on 2nd August 2008. 16/7/08 News from Kings Lynn...

Whilst the King's Lynn Semi Final does not take place for another week - the fantastic news is that the meeting is already hugely subscribed with over 60 F1 Stock Cars already booked in for action - which will make this meeting (with the exception of the WF!) the largest attended F1 meeting at the Norfolk Arena for five years!

The entry is also littered with quality with all seven superstars booked to race - with 53 John Lund making his first Lynn appearance of the season and 391 Andy Smith looking to debut what is probably the most talked about new car of 2008! In all 22 reds / superstars are booked in to race!

With so many drivers confirming their bookings we have released the booking in list as it stands - with 62 cars -although we will update the list next Wednesday with any additions and cancellations - at the moment another 8 drivers are hoping to be at the meeting but did not want to confirm their booking until after the weekend.

As well as the F1 Stock Cars Semi Final, the 2L Stock Cars are also in action - and with over a week to go a very pleasing 30 car entry has also been assembled - and with several Lynn regulars missing expect tha figure to go skywards over the next week!

At the moment the Semi Final meeting is looking like a full format 3 heat / cons . final / GN meet for the F1s and the Semi Final race is currently scheduled to be race four on the night.

Don't forget that you can save money by getting a queue jumper ticket in advance - these will be availabl from the TSR stand at Northampton's European Championship this weekend or they can be ordered by phone by ringing 01553 771111 or 01553 630507.

World Hot Rod Championship Comes to Nuttscorner Oval
The 2 Litre Hot Rod World Championship Final will be staged at Nuttscorner Oval in County Antrim over the weekend of July 26/27, during the biggest weekend of oval racing action ever staged in Northern Ireland. The SpeedWeekend will also see the Lightning Rods contest their British Championship in what promises to be a real explosive double-header of short oval racing.

A host of visitors are expected in both categories, and Ludlow Motorsport’s Mark Paffey from Hampshire will be leading the Spedeworth charge in the Hot Rods as he defends the title he won at Ipswich in 2007. Former National Hot Rod World title holder Malcolm Blackman has also signalled his intention to travel across the Irish Sea for the big event in the Mark Peck-owned car he’s been campaigning in 2008 alongside his National. Former double World-winner Kevin Randell will also be making the trip, with Chris Harvey and Sussex-based Kym Weaver two more of the 14 overseas entries expected to bid for the coveted World trophy.
The locals will harbour high hopes of keeping the title on home soil though, with current British and Irish champion Wayne Woolsey aiming to add the gold roof in his Tigra. Current European Champion Andy Best, who won the World the last time it was staged at Nuttscorner Oval in 2005, has been quiet in ’08 but can never be discounted, along with 2002 World winner John Murray. Add in Davy Clarke, Gary Wilson and Garry Campbell to name a few and it should be an action packed weekend of racing.

Midlands-based racer Lee Parsons will visit Nuttscorner Oval for the third time this season to defend his British Lightning Rod Championship crown, and he will be joined by recently crowned European Champion Harry Skoyles and Spedeworth hotshots Craig Boyd and Mick Walker for the big race. Hot favourite will of course be local ace Stephen Emerson, who last season bagged the World, European, ORCi and Irish Championships. Emerson has been in scintillating form of late, but can expect a tough time not only from the visitors but also from other local stars in the shape of Nigel Jackson, Gordon McKee and David Hearst.

There is a feast of other entertainment on the card across the weekend too, with the National Hot Rods in Round One of the 2009 World Qualifying Series, the all-action National Bangers contesting their annual King of Krash title, and support action from the ever-popular Reliant Robins and the youngsters in the Junior Productions.

The action gets underway with the qualifying heats on Saturday 26th July from 5.30pm, with the finals kicking off at 1pm on Sunday 27th.

/08 ‘Oval’ team tackles classic car rally

A team of short circuit racing enthusiasts is setting off on a re-creation of a unique 1958 marathon rally which saw tiny cars battle day and night over 2,000 miles of the toughest roads in Europe.

American Jamie Pfeifer and Wales-based Andrew Weltch will aim to take a half-century-old Berkeley over that same route from Liège in Belgium via Germany, Austria, Italy and Slovenia – legendary passes like Stelvio, Gavia and Vrsic – back to Liège.

The Weltch Media-sponsored Berkeley will be joined by other small cars under 700cc of the era, including BMW Isettas, Sundapps, Heinkels, Vespas, Messerschmitts and Italian Fiat 500s.

In 1958, British entrants comprised a works team of six Berkeleys, one crewed by Pat Moss and Ann Wisdom, fresh from winning the Ladies’ Prize on the Alpine Rally in an Austin-Healey 3000.

“This is going to be quite an adventure and a real nostalgia-trip for everyone,” said Weltch, who began his journalistic career writing hot rod race reports in the 1970s and now runs a media consultancy in Cardiff. “Just getting to the start in Liège is going to be the first challenge.”

Weltch, who has written several books on British oval racing, will navigate, while Pfeifer – an accomplished racer, who drives a Berkeley on the US veteran racing circuit – will take the wheel.

Based in St Louis, Missouri, Pfeifer is a regular visitor to Britain and has represented his country in world championships for BriSCA F1 stock cars and super rods.

“I took part in many rallies in the ‘60s, then the excitement of car racing caught me, and I have been historic car racing my Berkeley for 18 years now,” said Pfeifer. “Having been involved with Berkeleys for 48 years, this will be a once-in-a-lifetime event. I’m really looking forward to it, driving through Europe in a Berkeley, I can’t think of anything more fun and maybe just a little crazy.”

The car, powered by a Royal Enfield 700cc motorcycle engine, has few creature comforts and little space for luggage or spares.

The cars will drive at a fairly leisurely pace, taking 10 days to complete the course, which the 1958 drivers covered in less than three.

However, they will stop en-route for a series of driver tests.

The rally starts in Liège on July 11th and finishes in the city 10 days later. This one-off event of such rare and noticeable vehicles is generating worldwide interest and includes more than 80 entries from as far away as Australia as well as throughout Europe.

Fiat is providing sponsorship for the event, including support vehicles and a back-up fleet of new Fiat 500s in case of breakdowns.

29/6
/08 Just a short reminder that due to circumstances beyond Spedeworth's control the meetings that were originally planned for Aldershot on July 20th and July 27th have been cancelled This is due to the army having allocated the land for other commitments. Only these meetings are affected and this was announced a long time back but I thought that it might be worth mentioning just in case anyone still has a copy of the original fixture leaflet.

24/6/08 RDC who promote at Mildenhall and Dover have announced that they are now the new owners of Mildenhall Stadium. The stadium runs Greyhound Racing and Speedway as well as the Oval racing.  With  RDC now being responsible for the day to day running, maintenance and improvement of the stadium the Coventry family will have their hands full.

Anyway this important move should help ensure that racing continues at the Mildenhall Stadium so good luck to RDC with this venture.

22/6/08 Spedeworth  have announced that Dave Smith is to work in conjunction with the Richardson Media and Communications agency to oversee Spedeworth's biggest ever presence at The Autosport International Show that will as usual be at the NEC in January..

They will be working closely with Malcolm Forbes and Waltham Services Events the organisers of both the Oval Racing Experience and Spectacular.

Dave Smith is quoted as saying, "This show is the ultimate Motorsport Showcase, and enables us to put our sport and all its talent on display to a huge audience - many of whom may never have seen a Stock Car or a Hot Rod, and will doubtless be impressed with the professionalism of our drivers and the excitement our sport generates year in year out for thousands of fans".

He went on to say, "Both myself and Dave Richardson have important roles at Autosport which means we're fairly well occupied during the week prior to and indeed the show weekend, however senior members of the Spedeworth and Incarace staff will be on hand to help with both Drivers and race fans enquiries with all the hot off the press information for the brand new season of 2009."

19/6/08 A new forum for those interested in the CAMSO's has been started and you can reach it by clicking here.

19/6/08 Steve Usher has been in touch to tell us that Swaffham Raceway, which being run privately,  is introducing some different and more affordable short oval racing formulas. One of the formulas that has taken off is the Mondeo Rods, these are a cheap standard competitive formula that is growing rapidly in numbers. They are also to introduce an open wheel stockcar formula. More details of happenings at Swaffham can be found at www.swaffhamraceway.com

15/6/08 The June edition of Autograss Review is out now, 64 pages packed with info. and relevant adverts. How will fuel prices affect Autograss? There are three full pages of good quality pictures of new cars and they all look splendid. Photographer Gary Jones presents some great action shots from South Wales BAS opener and of course there is a full report. There was also masses of action at the 'Stu Nicholls Memorial Meeting'.  The next edition is due to publish on 5th July 2008. For a cover price of £2.50 this has to be brilliant value. For details of where to subscribe etc to Autograss Review click here.

11/6/08 Stu Stretton has kindly sent us a report from the Legends meeting on 8th June that was held at Aldershot. The report was written by Peggy-Ann-Lilley and it can be read by clicking here. I see a lot of pictures from the ovals and many of them are excellent but I must say that Stu's pictures (that you can see by clicking here ) are outstanding. Not only do they show the Legends at their best but also illustrate what a great track Spedeworth have at Aldershot.

9/6/08 Willie from North of the Border has been in touch with news of a new track....

Fife council have just given planning permission the go ahead for a new stock car track to be built at Lochgelly fife this is to be run by former hot rod driver Kinze law and what I have heard is that work is to start on the new track on Monday 9th June and will be ready for season 2009.It is still unclear at the moment what promotion it will run under i.e. Spedeworth or Brisca but great news for Drivers and spectators alike as the uncertainty with what's happening to the Cowdenbeath Racewall goes on.

27/5/08 Mark sent me a message that the Superstox Southern Championship was won by 376 (Steven Jackson) followed home by 60 (Ben Marjoram) and 124 (Dave Miles Snr). I was actually at this meeting and can report that the Superstox heats were won by 376 (after 60 was black flagged for jumping the start) and 124. The weather stayed dry and over 40 bangers took part in the banger team racing. The historic stocks put on some close and exciting racing. Also thanks to 5 year old Harry for keeping us entertained.
Click here to see pictures from this meeting.

22/5/08 It has been revealed that that Matchams Park Ringwood is the subject of another planning application. This application is for the demolition of the race track and the building of a number of residential and other buildings. 21/5/08 Two Races for Pickups on Bank Holiday Monday

Due to a restructure of the timetable the Pickup Trucks will now be appearing in two 35 lap races on the high speed oval on Monday 26th May.

The races are scheduled at 11.30am and 16.25pm respectively which is great news for the Pickup Truck race fans.

The event will see the return of Kelly-Jayne Wells and Paul Poulter to the Rockingham Oval for the first time in 2008.We have the new rookie Miguel Gomes, a Portuguese driver teaming up with Steve Dance and the Grabloader team for his first event in the UK.

With the established stars now looking for their first dry event in 2008 and John Mickel returning to the UK after his Craftsman Truck race at Lowes Motor Speedway the event is not one to miss.

Pickup Truck Racing boss Sonny Howard says: "The amended timetable gives us both races on Monday rather than one on each day. That's a format our race fans are used to so we're thrilled that the schedule has been altered. Sharing the bill with Formula Three and the British GT Championship means that once again Pickup race fans are getting to see their favourite championship running alongside prestige classes."

Gates open at 10.30am so come early to meet the drivers and teams in the top paddock for a fun day out for all the family.

16/5/08 The BARC south east festival of motorsport will be on Saturday September 6th at the refurbished Lydden Hill. Amongst the usual array of short circuit formulas, this year's meeting will include an Open class for Outlaw Hot Rods. Hopefully the drivers from Arena Essex will be joined by some Central hot rod drivers and may be other regions. The person to contact for bookings is (as usual) Ron Coventry on 01268 412299 for what promises to be a highly entertaining meeting.

/08 Derek has sent us a text to say that the Saloon English Championship that was held at St Day was won by 186 who was followed home by 511 & 499. Thanks Derek.

28/4/08 Despite huge numbers of race fans being attracted to the opening meeting at the new Aldershot track there was still a good number at Bovingdon. The rain stayed away and it was a superb meeting for the Superstox, Legends, Bangers and Ninja Karts. Superstox races were won by 376, 36 & 94, the first race had 39 runners and all races were to say the least hectic! The Legend races were also amazingly exciting with a number of cars finishing up more than a little bent. Race winners were 98, 156, 100 and 100 again. Bovingdon provides some of the most action packed racing that you will see anywhere.

You can see my pictures from the event by clicking here.

27/4/08 If you want to know how to find the Aldershot track I have added details to the Contacts page.

25/4/08 A fantastic field of over 40 superstox have already booked in for the Bovingdon meeting this coming Sunday.

23/4/08  STOCK CAR DRIVERS (Third Edition) NOW AVAILABLE

Cover of the third edition.

The third edition of Stock Car Drivers has just been published. It lists 4,686 Formula One Stock Car drivers who have registered in the 50 years since national numbering was introduced in 1957.
The book is split into two sections, one alphabetical (from Willie Abberley to Jan Zuk), and one numerical (from 0 to 998), and it gives details of the drivers, their home town, the years they registered and a note as to whether they raced under different numbers. The book runs to 123-pages and also includes a photo tribute to 2007 retirees – Danny Clarke (203), Frankie Wainman (212) and Howard Davis (327).
The book is something that you will pick up again and again and discover new and interesting facts. For instance, apart from a few exceptions, racing numbers between 1957 and 2007 have been in the series 0 to 550. In this series racing numbers 528, 530,535,540,543,544 and 550 have only been issued once whilst numbers 539, 541, 542 and 545 to 549 have never been issued. In contrast number 94 has been issued 18 times but this is outstripped by number 300 which has been issued no less that 22 times!
The year 1957 perhaps reflected a more colourful era in the sport given the following selection of names – 27 Crasher Allen, 34 Smasher Smailes, 81 Killer Sayers, 159 Bombshell Barrett, 160 Atomic Albert, 216 Homicide Hayden, 321 Whizzer Wilson, and the fact that 194 PG Woolfgang gave his home town as Siberia! Mind 1960 registered driver 483 Rat Face Ferrell, from the USA, also sounds quite menacing.
The third edition of “Stock Car Drivers” is available from Photostox, 17 Willingham Close, Sothall, Sheffield, S20 2PD at £20 including £2.50 postage and packing, or you can arrange to collect a copy at tracks by e-mailing Mike Greenwood (mike@photostox.demon.co.uk ) or calling him on (0114) 248 9166.

4/4/08 As you will see from the Spedeworth announcement below the opening of the Aldershot track has been delayed slightly but from the latest pictures (kindly sent by Christer from Spedeworth) the wait will be well worth it...

Thanks to www.oldstockcarpics.tk for the picture.

Spedeworth have let me know that they have had sad news about Ex Stock Car driver 402 Brian Sayers. He passed away on Sunday after a short illness. Brian was a quiet & reserved driver who just got on with his racing. He raced in the 70's with the likes of Eddie George, Foxy Dance and Spedeworth promoter Deane Wood.  Deane said that he remembers Brian very well from those early day's.

24/2/08 James Bradford saw the pictures of Steve's Top Rod (scale racing car) on this page and it has prompted him to send us this picture of his own Top Rod. (Where's the Roger's Oval racing sticker then James :-)  ). James has been the National Points Champion for the past two years. Thanks for the info James.

I have had a further message from James to say that they also race full contact stockcars (as seen in the picture below). These run a strimmer two stroke engine If anyone's interested they should contact Paul Barnes at Eastrax. (Click here for more details)

If you have an hour or two to spare I think that many of you will enjoy looking round Simon Lewis's page that lists many of the old stockcar tracks that used to exist in this country. Click here but be prepared to get caught up in looking through the list of names from the past.

14/12/07 The Spedeworth Historic Saloon Stockcars have been a huge success in 2007. The cars were certainly no museum pieces and often got well stuck in. The formula looks set to go from strength to strength  next year and I believe that it will have a slight name change, they will be known as Classic rather than Historic, this seems to be more in keeping with their all action approach to racing.

2/12/07  Graham Alexander has been in touch with some interesting news about Cowdenbeath....

Plans to replace Central Park with a state-of-the-art 3000-seater stadium have hit the buffers.

Cowdenbeath Football Club agreed a £2 million deal for the sale of the ground to Irvine-based developer McCartney Homes in February.

The cash was earmarked for a new stadium on the outskirts of the town.

The developer applied to Fife Council for outline planning permission to build a supermarket. Tesco was thought to be eyeing the site.

But, at the eleventh hour, McCartney Homes withdrew the application from under the noses of councillors who were set to block the ambitious proposals at Cowdenbeath Area Committee on Wednesday, 28th November.

Fife Council's planners recommended that councillors refuse the application because the site is earmarked for leisure facilities in the Local Plan.

Council planner, Bob Steedman, explained: "The Cowdenbeath Area Local Plan identifies the site as being for community leisure facilities because of its present use as a football club and lies outwith the defined town centre. Given this, the proposal is considered to be contrary to aims of the Local Plan.

"The Council is committed to encouraging convenience development as part of the redevelopment of demolished buildings in Cowdenbeath Town Centre. Further major convenience stores or extensions outside the existing town centres will not be consistent with the strategy of this Local Plan."

In February, Cowdenbeath chairman Gordon McDougall revealed the club were already in talks with the council to identify a site for a new stadium complex.

He described his vision, which would include a 3000-seat ground, a modern artificial grass pitch and hospitality facilities.

Mr McDougall said this week: "Through discussions with planners the advice has been that, in line with the current zoning, Central Park is for leisure use.

"We have been advised that the only way to change that is through the Local Plan."

26/11/07 Recently a new Banger Magazine has come out. It's called 'Mayhem' and it's aimed at all Banger fans, from Rookies to Nationals. Two things that you immediately notice about this mag. are that it's in full colour (every page) and that the cover price is only £2 (£2.50 by post). It's not intended that the mag. should replace the currently available mags. but that it should complement them. It concentrates on features and contains masses of colour pictures. The Pilot issue has, for example, articles on, millionaire racer Mikey Carroll, Jason Jackson, Lance Webb, Edward Kennett, Tim James and a well remembered name from the past Mick "Hulk" Davis. There are picture specials on the Eastbourne Gala Night, six!! pages on the Firecracker and a tribute to the late Barry Collins. On the news front there is an interview with promoter Deane Wood, a write up on Layhams Farm track and diary items from the Bricknell family. I'm not sure how they can produce all this and in colour for £2 but if you are a Banger fan then this mag. is well worth a look. Get it from the tracks or by post for £2.50 from Senlac Communications Ltd, 4 Mayo Rise, Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, TN39 5DB.

16/11/07 News from Mile Greenwood....

Mike Greenwood is pleased to announce that Photostox and Dutch partners ASF have again produced a F1 Stock Car Calendar. Whilst we can’t promise many half naked ladies we can promise top quality race car shots from the best of the UK and Dutch stock car photographers. The 2008 Calendar is now available and like the previous eight editions any profits will go to maintaining the Photostox Photo Archive of almost 200,000 images and the F1 Stock Car Drivers Database.

You can order your 2008 Calendar now from Photostox (Dept. ROP), 17 Willingham Close, Sothall, Sheffield. S20 2PD. The cost is the same as last year - £13.00 by post (cheque’s made payable to Photostox please) or £10 from around the tracks.

Reference was made above about the Stock Car Drivers Database. This year marks the 50th anniversary of nationally registered stock car drivers/numbers. Accordingly, we have chosen to hang on to include the 2007 registered drivers in the new edition of the “F1 Stock Car Drivers Register”. When the second edition was completed in 2004 with 4,184 entries, it was thought that we were getting pretty close to noting all drivers that had registered. However, through the dedication of some very enthusiastic race historians, and especially Granville Holmes, the listing has now grown by an extra 474 drivers to 4,658! Also a lot of further information about existing entries has also been added. We will have to move pretty quickly after the Brisca/BSCDA Gala Meeting on 1st December but are hopeful of having the new edition available by mid-December. Drop us a line if you would like to be kept posted of developments.

8/11/07 I have just received Mike Greenwood brilliant 2008 calendar, as usual it features F1 Stockcars. The cover alone is worth the cost! It has many superb photo's in full colour, photography at it's best. Cars from the UK and Holland are included and the text is in both English and Dutch. Therefore this is a great item for fans from both sides of the Channel. You can contact Mike on UK phone number 0114 2489166 or at 17 Willingham Close, Sothall, Sheffield S20 2PD or by email at mike@photostox.demon.co.uk

5/11/07 Derek Smith lets us know that there will be a swap meet at Wimbledon on Best of Britain night 25 of November, loads of vintage programs and magazines to buy, sell or swap. Don't miss it.

29/10/07 Shaun Brooker  (69 from Norwich) is the new Superstox World Champion. The World Final was held at Wimbledon on Sunday 28th October in pretty wet conditions.

The conditions didn't improve for the Howard Cole Memorial race. The trophy was taken after an action packed race by Colin Aylward (#51 from Crowland).

7/10/07 Danny Fiske (304) was out for the first time in a beautifully prepared 2L Hot Rod at Bovingdon. Although the car didn't appear in the major places it will no doubt soon be sorted.

30/12/06 I have been lucky enough to get my hands on a copy of Richard Neil's new book.....

This is a brilliant book with more nostalgia than you can shake a stick at. The words and pictures cover formulas such as Superstox, Hot Rods, Midgets, Stock Saloons at tracks such as Wimbledon, Cross in Hand, Ringwood, Yarmouth, Ipswich, Hednesford etc etc... Buy this one you'll love it, don't miss it!!! Here is what Richard had to say about his book.....

Following my first two books I have now completed a third and final volume covering the 1970s which includes, for the first time, a substantial colour section (the entire second half of the book). The new book, called Backtrack (subtitled The Golden Years of Oval Racing), will be published in November this year.

This title follows the success of my two 'Golden Years books, "Hot Rod Racing" and "Superstox and Stock Cars", both of which went for reprint within the first four months of publication.

In addition to Superstox, Stock Cars and Hot Rods, all the formulae that were not included in the first two volumes i.e. Stock Rods, Super Rods, Formula One, Midgets and Bangers also get a look-in in the new volume!

The new book will again be published by Tempus and will include just over 250 pictures. To incorporate all those, the book has a slightly larger format - 96 Pages, 226 x 248 mm.

Paperback: 96 pages
Publisher: Tempus Publishing Ltd (Nov 2006)
ISBN: 0752440802
rrp: £14.99 (postage free from the author at PO Box 1670, Croydon, Surrey, CR9 1TU)

1/12/02 Perhaps not one of the well known formulas on our tracks is the Modstox Formula but it is a very cost effective way to take to the raceways. The  cars are now well turned out and provide an excellent way into oval racing. David Roche, the chairman of the Modstox racing club, has sent us details and pictures of the formula.

If you have any Oval Racing news please post it to me and I will include it. Please mail to rogerv@btinternet.com.
