BANGERS SMASHED AT ANGMERING

Many thanks
to Rob Daines for the report and picture.
Bangers and
smash fans turned up to clear the festive hangovers and avoid the left over
turkey sandwiches at Angmering Raceway for the UK S.T.A.R. Nudge and Spin
Banger Championship on a beautifully cold and clear post-Christmas Sunday.
The championship got underway with a rapid and destructive race which left
the track strewn with wrecks as 777, Steve Baker steered through the damaged
autos to take the first win of the day.
The second race was an equally bruising affair for both cars and drivers,
with a massive roll over (which would not have disgraced a Hollywood movie)
for 200, Dean Archer on the home straight. As the racing began to take its
toll and car after car was reduced to scrap metal, 120 Matt Evans avoided
the pile ups to take the win.
The scene was now set for the Championship final as the battered track
warriors limped back onto the track, billowing steam from overheated engines
and wearing bodywork that had been severely rearranged from the last
fender-bending races.
Despite the race-damage inflicted on their cars, the drivers still kept
their right feet firmly down on the gas, with cars being spun out and
crushed out of contention all over the track. The race did not go well for
previous winner 777, Baker who hit the fence hard and brought out the red
flags for a race stoppage while he was helped from his wrecked car.
The race started at the same destructive pace only to be stopped again when
271, Jay Vee needed assistance after a particularly hefty shunt on the top
bend. Vee, along with Baker, was unhurt by the clerk of the course decided
that the race would be called at this point and awarded a joint first place
to 758, Jason Rudman and 114, Michael Jackson after a steward’s inquiry on
the finishing positions at the actual time the race was called off. The two
drivers sportingly tossed a coin to see who would get the actual track
championship trophy with Rudman calling it correctly. Both drivers professed
themselves happy with the result and pledged to back to retain the trophy
next year, with hopefully just one standing at the top of the pack
There will be another action-packed day of racing at
Angmering on January 18th, when the amazing British Caravan Grand Prix takes
place.
Angmering is located just off the A280, between Worthing and Angmering. The
gates open at 8am, with racing commencing at 11.30am. Adult admission is £10
kids, 10-14, £5, with kids under ten free. Senior Citizens, disabled and
Students (with valid student cards) can also enjoy a days racing for just
£5. Angmering also offers free parking on hard core surfaces.
Tough racing conditions at Angmering Raceway, December
14th

The rain held
off at Angmering (www.ovalraceclub.co.uk) on Sunday, November December 14th.
However, the drivers still had their work cut out to keep to their racing
lines and avoid hitting the safety fence as the track was very slick from
previous rainfall and the inevitable grease and oil from previous racing.
With such tricky conditions several cars took unplanned exits from the track
as spin outs and shunts into the fence were the order of the day.
With the tricky heats out of the way, the drivers went all out for the
finals and the silverware.
The Junior Rods saw 217, Laura Blakeborough took the honours ahead of 969,
Sam Townsend-Oldfield and 80, Frank Townsend-Oldfield.
The young drivers in the Junior Prod Stox also braved the less than
favourable conditions well with a win for 49, Bradley Allan, second for 28,
Craig Cooper and a third for 188, Billy Page.
In the adult formulas 92, Jamie Lee Potter kept his powerful Hot Rod on line
to win the Hot Rod Handicap ahead of the equally hard-charging 85, Paul
Perry and 336, Ryan Lilleywhite.
The nudge and spin Bangers did not seem to mind the slippery track
conditions and proceeded to deliver a day full of metal-bending action that
saw most of the cars totally destroyed, 114 Michael Jackson (in a suitably
tinsel and Christmas tree adorned car) crashed through the carnage to win
the final. The surviving Bangers limped out onto the track for the
demolition derby which was a very tough affair survived at the end by 536,
Ryan Cunningham.
The front-wheel-drive Saloon Rods were well set up to handle the slick
conditions and delivered some very quick laps culminating in a final win for
575, Russell Figg who beat home 74, Andrew McKenzie and 44, John Sayers.
The rear-wheel drive Saloon Rods found the going much tougher, with the big
Jaguars and Mercedes spinning out as the drivers put the power down. 724,
Steven Wright kept his car out of the fence to win the final, with 301, Jeff
Eaton coming in second and 36, Anthony Donovan taking third.
The Street Stocks saw 28, James Burnham take the silverware with 11, Mark
Wood in second and 587, Bob Weir in third.
Superstox final saw Jim Stuart survive a very scary spin out ahead of the
traffic to take first place with Dan Smith and Mick Ramsay following him
over the line.
There will be another action-packed day of racing at
Angmering on December 28th, when the nudge and spin Bangers tear into each
other for the UK Star Banger Championship.
ANGMERING’S RACERS BRAVE SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS TO
DELIVER A GREAT DAY’S RACING

The driving rain and high wind made the day’s racing extremely difficult for
all the formulas at Angmering (www.ovalraceclub.co.uk) on Sunday, November
23rd. However, the drivers still kept their right feet down hard on the
accelerators to deliver another action-packed day’s racing at the Sussex
track.
With such atrocious conditions several cars met the safety fence before the
day was over, and spin outs were very common as the drivers fought to find
traction on the wet track.
Gary Pope, 19, slid through the wet to take the final in the Production Stox
Novice class, ahead of 200, Sophie Guy and 94, Hayden Tucker.
Ian Stevens, 201, took the honours in the Hot Rod Handicap with 92, Jamie
Lee Potter in second and 22, Steve Smith in third.
The ever-popular nudge and spin Bangers tore each other to bits in fine
style with 114 Michael Jackson coming through the carnage to win the final
and 11, Mark Wood closing the meeting with a win in the last car left moving
demolition derby.
There were wins for 74, Andy McKenzie in the FWD Saloon Rods 206, Simon
Crittenden in the Prod Stox, 724 Steven Wright in the Saloon Rods RWD and
587, Jim Stuart in the Street Stocks.
The visiting Classic Stock Cars put on a great show, demonstrating that the
old ‘uns could still take on the modern machines by sharing the track with
the Street Stocks. The final saw 881 Gary Dyer take the chequered behind the
wheel of his rapid Mk I Cortina ahead of 666, Mick Thorpe’s classic Volvo.
Robert Daines, piloting the 695 Ford Zodiac for Classic Car Weekly, had a
massive coming together with a Street Stock that left the modern machine
much the worse for wear, while the classic Stock Car recovered from the
shunt to go on to claim third place.
There will be another great day’s racing at Angmering
on December 14th, with all the regular formulas chasing points in the Winter
Championship series.
Angmering is located just off the A280, between Worthing and Angmering. The
gates open at 8am, with racing commencing at 11.30am. Adult admission is £10
kids, 10-14, £5, with kids under ten free. Senior Citizens, disabled and
Students (with valid student cards) can also enjoy a days racing for just
£5. Angmering also offers free parking on hard core surfaces, ensuring that
the worst Mother Nature can deliver will not turn the car parking areas into
a mud bath.

Hot Rod Open Angmering
9th November
Many thanks
to Rob Daines for the report and
www.racepixels.co.uk for the picture.

The powerful and crowd-pleasing Hot Rods returned to Angmering (www.ovalraceclub.co.uk)
to do battle in the new Hot Rod Open on Sunday, November 9th.
With a grid of star drivers all keen to take the title, which was last
contested in 2003, the racing was guaranteed to be close and exciting and
the drivers did not disappoint the assembled racing fans.
Heat 1 set the scene with the cars burning rubber from a standing start on
the home straight, with 259 Rob Brewer taking the early lead, before a heavy
crash on turn 3 ended the day’s racing for 88, Mark Raven and brought out
the red safety flags for a complete restart. As racing resumed, 259, Rob
Brewer stormed into the lead, harried all the way by 100, Dick Burtenshaw.
Brewer held on until the last bend on the last lap when Burtenshaw powered
past, with 67, Robert Taylor following through the gap to take second.
Heat 2, saw the track drying from a previous light rain, allowing 287, Colin
Gomm to build a strong lead as the race progressed. It was not all his way,
however, as Burtenshaw’s 100 car was soon challenging for the lead. This
time the chequered flag was not be his for the claiming as Gomm powered over
the finish line ahead of a very hard-charging Burtenshaw.
Heat 3 saw a repeat performance in the closing stages of the race, with Gomm
pouring on the power, with Burtenshaw’s car at times about an inch behind
his rear bumper. The end result was the same too, with the top spot going to
Gomm and second place to Burtenshaw after a very fast and tight duel to the
finish.
With some amazingly fast and hotly contested heats, the fans were really
looking forward to the final and once again they were not let down by the
Hot Rod pilots.
A Crash on the pit bend brought the race temporarily to a halt as the driver
and his car were moved to safety, but when the green flag fell again it was
a pedal to the metal dash for the finish and the Hot Rod Open title. This
time it was a reversal of the previous dog fights with 100, Burtenshaw
leading and 287 Gomm snapping at his bumper and attempting every racing line
open to get past.
Burtenshaw had clearly had enough of finishing in second place and really
pushed the car to the limit, building a commanding lead in the closing
stages of the race and burning over the finish line to take the title ahead
of Gomm and third place man, 280 Ross Ayling.
The new Hot Rod Open champion declared himself pleased with the return of
the title race after its 5 year absence and “really pleased with the win and
what was a spot on day’s racing for the drivers and the fans.”
There will be more racing action at Angmering on November 23rd when the
Winter Championship racing continues for all formulas.

Winternationals
Many thanks
to Graham Campling for the two National Ministox reports.
After a good
soaking at Coventry on Saturday night (Ministox racing abandoned after two
races), we headed for a Sunday meeting at Belle Vue! In spite of the black
clouds, the track was in great condition and there was no rain until it was
time to drive home.
This proved to be a great weekend for #2 Sam Daley. The grade multiplier
used in the Winternationals meant he took the championship on Saturday
night. As the only Yellow grade driver to score in the heats, he took pole
position in the North-Western Championship Final and managed to stay ahead
of the chasing drivers throughout the race.

Rob Batten (467) became the 8th
different final winner of the 2008 season at St Day, winning the magnificent
"Old Motorcycle club Trophy", the origins of which go back to when Speedway
was run at the original St Austell Cornish Stadium.
BriSCA F2
Stock Cars
There was anything but a shortage of prizes at stake for the F2 Stock Cars
in their last national meeting of the season in Cornwall. The first event
for them was the grand final of the White & Yellow grade series, and Ian
Jefferies (992) quickly established himself in the lead. Mike Priddle (14)
and Ashley Rundle (116) strived manfully to get on terms with the lead car,
but to no avail as Jefferies held on to take his first ever race win, Rundle
and Priddle aptly completing a C grade top three. Heat two featured a
chaotic opening lap for the red grade as they all clashed at the start of
the home straight before they had crossed the line, allowing Priddle to
forge into a strong lead. Gradually he was reeled in by Paul Butcher (189)
and Richard Beere (254), Butcher ultimately taking the lead and the
subsequent victory on what could prove to be the last St Day meeting of his
career, lets hope not.
Another chaotic start for the star grade in heat three allowed Rundle to
open up a good lead, so much so that it took until the last but one lap for
Tim Farrell (667) to be able to mount a challenge, Farrell eventually moving
through to take the victory.
Twenty five drivers took to the grid for the Old Motor Cycle Club Trophy
feature final. The superb silver cup was purchased over 50 years ago, at a
cost of £100, which gives an indication to its current day value. An
additional aspect of the race was the lure of a £25 bonus for the leader of
each of the 20 laps of the race.
Neil Lampshire (737) took the opening lap, and then Priddle took over,
leading the next thirteen laps, to scoop £325. With the race into its final
third, Rob Batten (467) had overhauled Priddle, and looked set for victory.
However, a race suspension closed up the grid. Ross Rowe (105) was very much
in contention, as was Dave Luscombe ( 642), but Rowe suffered a misfire and
retired when the race resumed, delaying Luscombe as the race re started. As
Rob Batten stormed clear, Luscombe eased into second, but ran out of time in
his pursuit of Batten who duly became the eighth different final winner in
as many F2 fixtures at St Day this year.
Priddle led the Grand National as Luscombe, Farrell and the unfortunate Neil
Hooper (676) crashed out together in the pit bend. Matt Stoneman (127)
eventually moved into the lead, Chris Cuming (393) and Andrew Bennett (830)
following suit, Stoneman held on to take the flag, his second Grand National
victory in a week.
Bangerstox
There was a slightly disappointing shortfall in numbers in the Bangerstox,
yet still there were more than 40 drivers in action.
The day began with a heat win for 45 Mike Reed, and not to be upstaged by
his son, 451 Mickey Reed took heat two. A late charge by 153 Rachel Tavender
netted her the consolation,
677 Glenn Nash clinched the St Day Track Championship in sensational style,
as he romped to victory in the meeting final. Nash won from 718 Adie Brown,
313 Ross Hawtin, whilst 183 Martin Horn rounded off the day with a
convincing win in the Allcomers event.
Ministox
Another fine showing of youngsters in the Ministox saw 18 junior drivers in
the pit area, including a debut outing for Scott Collings (911). Heat one
saw Vicky Butcher (981) take up the running, only to loose out in the
closing stages as Ryan Hoskins (991) and Ollie Wakefield (944) moved into
first and second respectively. A late challenge from Andrew Neville (917)
saw him net third.
A superb second heat saw Butcher in the lead once more until she was spun
out of contention in the turnstile bend. Shortly afterwards Joshua Davey
(975) lost a wheel to bring out the yellow flags. Ben Goddard (995) took up
the running for a time, before Wakefield moved through into the lead.
Despite being tracked by Jordan Lobb (930) Wakefield impressively took the
victory.
The final saw Adam Neville (903) go into the lead, but as Goddard closed on
the leader Wakfield made his move to take up the running. Hoskins moved
through into second before the finish, whilst Goddard took a fine third
position. The runner-up finish for Hoskin in the final propelled him to the
top of the Track Championship chart.

BriSCA F2
Stock Cars
Newcomer Brett Townsend (710) led away the opening heat of the afternoon.
Indeed on his track debut Townsend opened up quite a lead before Paul
Butcher (189) took up the running. Bill Batten (167) was making good
progress from the rear, as Chris Cuming (393) and David Polley (38) served
up some cracking action with an almost race long battle. This naturally
slowed their progress somewhat allowing Batten an unhindered run to the
front. Townsend slowed into retirement whilst high up in the placings,
whilst Tim Farrell (667) and Mick Sworder (152) followed Batten through into
second and third respectively. As Batten took the flag returnee Terry
Butcher (509) did well to hold onto fourth spot behind the aforementioned
Sworder.
Heat two also served as the whites and yellows final, and a cracking race it
was too. Ashley Rundle (116) led the field off, opening out quite a lead at
one stage, only to see it reduced because of a caution period called as a
result of a roll over for Adam Hooper (696). Rundle once more settled into
the lead, but Jamie Beere (954) started to put him under pressure allowing
Matt Stoneman (127) to make it a three way battle for the lead. Henry King
(78) and Piers Cockerill (497) clashed resulting in another caution period,
which of course served to close the field back up again. Stoneman took up
the running despite resistance from Rundle, whilst Beere and Andrew Bennett
(830) clashed to bring out the yellow flags once more. Stoneman took up the
running, whilst Cockerill made good progress to take up second position,
moving past Eddie Darby (877) as he did so. By this time Stoneman was clear
of the chasing red tops, and he held on to take his first win for some time.
A lively consolation saw Andy Cattell (909) impressively lead from flag to
flag, whilst close behind, but not just close enough was Ian Jeffries (992).
King had a good run from the rear of the field to take third, whilst Cuming
did well to recover from a mid race spin to take ninth.
The final took four attempts to get it fully underway, a series of
spectacular crashes and incidents the reason for the red flags, this
depleted the field by a significant number of drivers for when the final got
underway at the fifth attempt.
Rundle led the final up to around half distance, for the majority of the
early part of the race Mike Priddle (14) tracked him in second despite
having lost his rear view mirror when he became involved in one of the
aforementioned early final stoppages. Polley was by this point on a charge,
and he hit the front at around half distance, Cockerill following him
through to take second. Rundle held on to third until the closing stages,
whereupon Priddle made his move and took third place. Polley took the flag
to bring to an end a highly entertaining, if destructive final.
A superb Grand National brought the afternoon to a close. Jefferies led the
race away, but behind him there were some big hits going in, King and
Sworder in particular moving cars aside as they worked their way through the
field. It was King who led the way, and he hit the front, leaving Sworder to
settle for third place behind Jefferies, who claimed a superb second place,
whilst Priddle had yet another good race to come home in fourth spot.
Saloon Stock Cars
The westcountry season for Saloon Stock Cars came to a close with a lively
showing. The White & Yellow grade final was first up, Chris Horwell (103)
opened out a healthy lead, only to succumb to a puncture that forced him to
retire. He had been ahead of a great battle for second spot, Barry Hollett
(30) eventually working his way to the head of this group to take up the
running. Nigel Parker (305) and Ian Govier (328) moved into second and third
respectively by the finish.
Shane Brown (720) took heat one by the scruff of the neck, as we worked his
way to the front of the field. The main action was for the places behind
Brown, and very lively it was too, Steve Webster (401) eventually claiming
second, as Frank Little Junior (10) and Govier clashed.
It was a similar story in heat two, as early leaders Kenny Peters (964) and
Peter Low (631) led the race before Brown moved through. Once again there
was great action behind him, Steve Webster once again claiming second. It
was a similar story in the final, Peters and Low headed the race for a
number of laps before the fast charging Brown took up the running. Phil
Powell (199 was running well in this one, Powell moving Shaun Webster (402)
wide on the last bend to take a superb second place behind Brown.
Small Van Bangers
Regrettably, the switch to small van Bangers did not yield many competitors,
but having scooped Best Presented awards, 55 Oggy, 88 Woody and 190 Pikey
set about one another with smiles and tenacity. Pikey's showing was first
class, as he won the race, and then the DD.
Bangerstox
The record car count for Bangerstox was smashed, as 84 drivers contested
their eleventh and penultimate round of qualifying for the Supreme
Championship.
Jody Jeanes (133) took the opening heat from Ben Sealy (475), whilst Julian
Hellyer (708) took the second. Danny Hunt (382) claimed the third heat,
before the consolations went the way of Joss Hutchings (492) and veteran
racer Kev Gooding (156).
Danny Hunt led home father Steve in the final, with Kevin Hooper (734)
taking third spot. Tony Bevan (458) and Martin Horn (183) took the heavily
subscribed allcomer races to round off the afternoons action.

Saturday 4th October 2008 - Coventry Stadium -
NMSC British Open Championship
Many thanks
to Graham Campling for the two National Ministox reports.
Three drivers
caught the attention this weekend. Firstly, a very popular win for our new
British Champion, #22 Bradley Harrison, on Saturday night at Coventry.
Bradley is only in his first season of NMSC racing.
Sunday at Buxton saw the final appearance of #11 Andrew-John Thompson (it's
his 16th birthday on Wednesday 8th October). A-J has won championships and
retained his superstar status through a smooth, fast driving style -
although he certainly knows how to use the front bumper. We all wish him
well for the future.
The third driver is our National Champion #1 Jack Aldridge. Jack's rolled
his ministox in a spectacular, high speed incident on the back straight in
Race One at Buxton. Undaunted, and with a squashed roof shell, he was back
out on track again to claim 5th place in Race Two and 4th place in the
Final.
