You can name your web page files whatever you choose although the names should NOT contain spaces. However the page that you want to appear first should be named index.htm, or index.html (all in lower case).

When a browser searching for your URL arrives at your web space, it looks for a file called index.htm. If one exists, the browser displays it automatically. If there isn't a file with that name, the browser doesn't know which page it should display first, and so it simply lists the contents of your web space.

If you use a different name for your first page, say homepage.htm, you'll have to include it in your URL:

http://www.btinternet.com/~smith.family/homepage.htm

or

http://www.smith.family.btinternet.co.uk/homepage.htm

(see details on Virtual Domains for information on this format)

Likewise, the browser expects to find index.htm on the top level of your web space. If you upload your web pages in a folder, say webstuff, you'll have to include the folder name in your URL:

http://www.btinternet.com/~smith.family/webstuff/

or

http://www.smith.family.btinternet.co.uk/webstuff/
