Connection/Access FAQs

Q. Can I use my ISDN2 line to connect to the Internet if I'm on a BTinternet for BT Surf package?
A. You can connect on ISDN2 at 64kbps. However, if you want to connect at 128kbps you will need to configure your dial-in software and pay two local call charges. Click here for further information.

Q. When online, how do I switch from chargeable daytime calls to free calling?
A. BTinternet will provide two icons on your PC desktop (designated BT Internet SurfTime and BTinternet Daytime) – all you have to do is click on the appropriate icon for the time of day that you are logging on. To switch from one dial-in connection to another, you will have to log off and re-connect with the alternative dial-in software.

Q. Can I access from overseas?
A. Yes. For full access (web pages and e-mail) you simply call the BTinternet international access number. Please click here for further information. If you just need to read or send e-mails, you can use the BTinternet Web-based email feature from somewhere like a cybercafe and simply pay the prevailing rate. Further details on this subject are available on the BTinternet Web pages.

Q. Why do I have to register for both the BTinternet service and a BT Surf package?
A. To ensure you pay no call charges for your evening and weekend calls you must place your order with BT for the BT Surf package of your choice. To do this simply click here to go to the BT SurfTime Website to register.

Q. What if I try to use my SurfTime dial-in software during the day?
A. As a network safeguard, the BTinternet SurfTime dial-in software will NOT allow surfing outside the free call periods. Your connection will be terminated immediately, although a 5p minimum call charge will be incurred.

Q. I have registered for SurfTime, but my icon doesn't work – why not?
A. This will only occur for one of the following reasons: you are not a BT customer; SurfTime is not available in your particular area; your details do not match BT records or you have a bad credit rating.

Q. Will BTinternet for SurfTime work with WAP mobile phones?
A. No, that's not how the WAP service works. Your WAP phone will be pre-configured with an Internet service provided by your mobile operator. In order to access the BTinternet WAP portal to get your BTinternet e-mails etc. simply bookmark wap.btinternet.com/ on your phone (Information on how to configure your WAP mobile, get e-mail and use additional services is all accessable from the BT Internet homepage).
