E-mail
Faqs - A beginner's guide
What is e-mail? E-mail (Electronic Mail) is a fast and efficient way of posting an electronic document, such as a letter or message, to a recipient electronically over the Internet rather than posting it in a postbox. You send and receive e-mail by using your e-mail program on your computer to connect to the Internet and send/receive any messages waiting for you via your Internet Service Provider. What is the benefit of e-mail over normal "snail" mail? You can use e-mail to keep in touch with family and friends in a faster and more efficient way than by writing letters, without the expense of long phone calls and the difficulties caused by international time differences. It can take anything from a few minutes to a few hours for your e-mail messages to arrive. What do I need to know before I can use e-mail? If you are sending an e-mail, you will need to know the e-mail address(es) of your recipient(s) (ie Joe.Bloggs@hisdomain.com.) Your e-mail address will automatically be included in the e-mail message you are sending, so that the recipient(s) can reply. When you registered with BTinternet, you chose an e-mail address and a password. Your unique e-mail address is of the form: david.smith@btinternet.com. The password ensures that no-one else can use your e-mail address to send messages. An e-mail address is usually made up of three parts. The first part is often your name, e.g. david.smith.The second part is called the domain name such as BTinternet. The final part of the address can give you an idea of where the customer is coming from. Addresses ending with .com indicate a commercial address; .co.uk addresses are UK-based companies; ac.uk signifies a UK University or academic institution. With the exception of American e-mail addresses, there is usually a two letter code at the end of the address to signify the country: .ca addresses are Canadian for example. Can I set up other e-mail addresses? You can create up to four additional mailboxes, each with their own name and password. Look at Create a new mailbox for more information. Can I change my e-mail passwords? Yes. You can easily change to password(s) of your e-mail account(s). Look at Change your mailbox details to find out more. Is there any other way to send e-mail?
