With each BTinternet account, you can create up to five individual mailboxes, each with their own name and password. To find out how to create additional mailboxes, go to the Multiple Mailboxes page.

Multiple Mailboxes

Internet Mail and News for Macintosh allows you to log on using any of your five e-mail addresses. To set up multiple users, follow the instructions below:

  1. From the Edit menu, choose Switch User.
  2. Click New.
  3. Type in a name for the new user and click OK. A user folder for the new user is created and Internet Mail and News switches to this folder.
  4. From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
  5. Under the Mail Server option, make sure that the "Get mail server information from Internet Config" box is not checked. Enter the mail server information for this user. The SMTP Host Name is mail.btinternet.com. The POP Account is your chosen e-mail name, for example, john.smith@mail.btinternet.com. The POP Password is the password that you chose when you created this e-mail address.
  6. If you want this user to enter their POP password before the start-up process completes and the user's mail is visible, check the "Ask For Password On Startup" box.
  7. Under the News Server option, make sure that the "Get news server information from Internet Config" box is not checked. Enter the news server information for this user. The BTinternet news server is called news.btinternet.com
  8. Under the User Profile option, make sure that the "Get user profile information from Internet Config" box is not checked. The User Name is usually your real name. E-mail Address is your chosen e-mail address, for example john.smith@btinternet.com
  9. Click OK.

Once multiple users are set up, the Switch User dialog box appears whenever the application is started, and each user must choose their name from the list. If the user selected has the password preference on, a Password dialog box appears, and user must type in their POP password before proceeding.

When you create a new user, a folder with the user's name is added to the Users folder in the Internet Mail and News application folder. Each user folder contains the following: Address Book, Internet Mail, Internet Mail and News Prefs, and Internet News.

Note: Internet Config is a third-party application that enables Internet applications to share preferences. It should serve as a template for information that all users share, such as the news server. Anything entered in Internet Config appears as the default setting in the Preferences dialog box for all new users. For this reason, you should not enter any information that is specific to one user.

For more information on setting up Internet Mail and News for multiple users, go to the Internet Mail and News folder stored in the BTinternet folder and open the Help folder. Doubleclick on the file IMNHelp.htm - this will load up the Help files in your Web browser.
