How do I get access to the newsgroups?

Open your Internet Mail program.

Click on the News window to bring it to the front of the screen. To see a list of newsgroups available on BTinternet, click on the Open Newsgroups icon. This will bring up a new window with the list. The first time you use the program, you will need to download the names of all the newsgroups, a process which will take some time (there are over 20,000 newsgroups). To do this, click on the Show All Newsgroups icon. You will not have to do this subsequently.

To read the articles posted to a particular Newsgroup, click on its title in the Newsgroups window and then click on the Go to Newsgroup icon. A new window will appear with all recent articles posted to that group. To read one, just click on its title.

To reply to an article already posted, click on the Reply to Newsgroup icon. Type in your message, and when ready, click on the Post Message icon. Note that the whole of the article you are responding to is quoted in your message. It is good etiquette when replying to a Newsgroup article to only quote relevant sections of the previous message.

You may wish to reply to the author of a message privately, as opposed to replying to all readers of the group. To do this, click on the Reply to Author icon. Your message will be sent by e-mail to the author of the original message.

To post a new article, click on the New Message icon. Type your message in the main box, not forgetting to give the message a subject in the Subject box. When ready, click on the Post Message icon.

How do I set up an alternative news reader?

If you are using another news program to the one supplied when you joined BTinternet, you will need to know the address of the BTinternet news server. This is: news.btinternet.com
