Caller Line Identification
Please note: Pay-as-you-go members must have caller line identification enabled when accessing BTinternet.
Q. What is CLI and why is it necessary?
A. CLI stands for "Caller Line Identification" and it is this facility which allows customers to see who is calling them before they answer the phone. BTinternet Pay-as-you-go uses CLI to retain an audit trail of calls to the service as a security measure. All BT phone lines send CLI unless a request has been made to withhold this information. If you have requested BT to provide a permanent "number withhold" option then BTinternet Pay-as-you-go will not work from your phone line unless you request this facility to be removed, or remove it on a per call basis (see below). You can do this if your provider is BT, by calling 0800 800 150. For all other networks you should contact your service provider for advice.
Q. How do I know whether I am forwarding CLI?
When you call someone, your number will be registered on their telephone exchange and the person called will be able to track their last call by dialling 1471. If your number is withheld this will not work. Your number will only be withheld if you have requested this with your service provider, so to forward it for all calls you need to contact your provider. It is possible to release your CLI on individual calls in order to enable BTinternet Pay-as-you-go to work. Instructions on how to do this are below.
Q. I have "number withhold as an option on my phone line. Can I still use BTinternet Pay-as-you-go?
A. Yes, you can solve this problem in a couple of ways. You can remove the facility on a permanent basis, by calling your telephone supplier. If your provider is BT, please call 0800 800 150. Otherwise, you can manually update your BTinternet Pay-as-you-go software to remove the facility on a "per call" basis.
To manually set up my BTinternet Pay-as-you-go dial-in software.
The following shows you how to set up the BTinternet Pay-as-you-go dial-in software so that CLI is sent each time you call BTinternet. CLI will still be with-held on all other calls.

- Go to the desktop and double click on the BTinternet Pay-as-you-go icon

- Single click on the "Dial Properties" button and a new window called "Dialing Properties" will be displayed.

- Go to the "How do I dial from this location" field.
- Insert "1470,," into the "To access an outside line, first dial" box (note that you must include the two commas).
- Repeat this information in the "for long distance" box.

- The number displayed should now read "1470,, 0845 756 0000".
- Click on the "OK" button.
- Press "Cancel" buttons until you have returned to your desktop startup screen.
- You are now ready to use BTinternet Pay-as-you-go.
- For service providers other than BT, follow their instructions for "per call" CLI forwarding.
