This
section will mainly reflect people who are no longer with us, this is
for legal reasons, however from time to time there will be others
included for a special mention, for their outstanding contribution to
the community.
Jonah
Cottrell : Stonemason, who recorded the
lives of the deceased in stone throughout the Parish, his outstanding
example of the art of stone carving must be the war memorial, proudly it
stands at the junction of High Street and John Street, giving testament
to the brave young men of two world wars whose lives were lost.
Georgie
Weston : General Grocer. Who sold
everything a household needed. From Disinfectant, mousetraps, candles,
step stones, dolly dyes, clothes pegs, soft-soap he also talked a lot of
this.
Bill Hall :
Coal Merchant - Coach Operator : Bill would
sometimes combine the two and deliver coal in the bus, an inventive
mechanic he kept a 1949 Morris Commercial Wagon on the road until his
death a few years ago.
John Bailey : Farmer, Of Knypersley
Park Farm, Built like the proverbial brick outhouse, I have seen him
carry a 5 gallon can of diesel bear hug style from Red Cross Garage back
to the farm, while holding a conversation and never miss a beat.
Spurgie
Beech : Fish Fryer, On Saturday nights
after a visit to the local cinema, you had a choice catch the last bus
home or have fish and chips, needless to say we always walked home and
Spurgie's were the best.
Cyril
Machin : Baker, who's activities filled
the air with that wonderful smell only new baked bread can provide, nice
one Cyril.
Reg Yoxall :
Bus Driver, who is remembered for that memorable
run from Congleton to Biddulph at high speed, I think it was near to
closing time at the pub and Reg wanted a quick one.
Arthur Fryer :
Headmaster, a fair enough soul although he did
beat children with a Bamboo stick, a practice that would not be accepted
today.
William(Billy)
Booth : Undertaker, a generous man who
never had a client come back and complain.
Mr. & Mrs. Rutter :
Sweet shop Owners, who also made the most
delicious ice cream, a major contribution to the childhood of every
child who licked one.
Funny
Harry : Who assisted with the Carrying of
a hen cote, half way up Tunstall Road someone asked where Harry was and
a voice came from inside, I'm in here carrying the perches.
Sid
Times(Hulme) : News Agent, Who delivered
news papers from early morning until late evening, when he wasn't doing
that you could find him supporting the wall in the bar of The Rose and
Crown.
Eddy Bread(Evans): Bakery
Rounds man, Come hail, rain or shine, delivered the bread on time, in my
case 4 o'clock in the afternoon, last known whereabouts Shopkeeper in
Woore.
