Brief History

The A40 Choir was formed in 1995, following the success of the A40 Orchestra, party to enable the A40 Orchestra to complete its Beethoven Symphony cycle with the Choral. It has since seen a steady increase in numbers - outgrowing its initial rehearsal and choral concert venues after only two years - in spite of many other older Choirs in the area.

In 1997-98 the A40 Choir combined with the A40 Orchestra - in High Wycombe - to perform Beethoven Choral Symphony with the little known Liszt Psalm 13, and Haydn The Creation as part of the season's National Lottery funded series of concerts. From November 2001 it will work with the newly formed fully professional A40 Concert Orchestra.

In January 1999 and January 2000 the Choir hosted two all day Sing-in worshops with guest soloist, Glenys Groves, a member of the Royal Opera, Covent Garden. The emphasis was on Vocal Technique and its application to favourite choral miniatures, and included individual 'surgeries' with Glenys. Another workshop in January 2003 on Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius also had a session on rhythm.

Within three months of being formed, the A40 Choir broadcast a Christmas Carol by David Meacock on Classic FM. In October 1999, along with the A40 Orchestra, the A40 Choir was a Classic FM 'Team of the Week'.

On 16 December 2000 the A40 Choir made its Queen Elizabeth Hall, South Bank, London début, and was immediately invited to return on 22 December 2001. In April 2002, 37 choristers from the Choir were enthusiastically received in Rouen Cathedral.

A40 Choir members have been to the new A40 Super Choir London bring and sing events, taking a bus from Gerrards Cross. See the new A40 Super Choir page for further details of forthcoming events.
