Aconcagua from the east

Mountaineering in Argentina

Including Polish Glacier Option

Only one space left Christmas 2001-02

Aconcagua is the highest peak in South America, at 6959m. Due to exceptional demand last year we are again running three expeditions to Aconcagua over winter 2001-02. On all of our expeditions we'll climb by the quieter eastern side joining the normal route high on the mountain. From the Plaza Argentina base camp at 4200m the eastern route on Aconcagua involves a couple of hard days up over scree to a high camp at the foot of the Polish Glacier at 5900m. From here the normal route is over scree and snow to the summit. The ascent is suitable for anyone with several years mountain walking experience and previous experience of extended wilderness camping. Winter skills, such as the use of an ice-axe and crampons are not normally necessary.

On each expedition we will have an option to climb to the summit by the Polish Glacier (provided we have sufficient clients interested) from the same high camp at 5900m. This option is suitable for anyone with some winter climbing experience, or very experienced winter or Alpine walkers.

Before going to Aconcagua we make a short trip to the beautiful Cordon del Plata where there will be a chance to climb one of the smaller peaks in the range (up to 5000-5500m) as a training peak for our ascent of Aconcagua.

Most of our Aconcagua trips since 1995 have sold out, sometimes by as early as May, so book soon for these ones if you want to be sure of a place.
