Mountaineering in Bolivia

With an option to climb either Condoriri or Ancohuma in place of Sajama

Bolivia is one of the most interesting and enjoyable destinations for a climbing trip to the Andes. Our 2001 Bolivia expedition will attempt the highest in the Cordillera Real, Illimani 6462m. The ascent of Illimani, which lies near La Paz, will take 5 days with a spectacular high camp above the glaciers. The mountain is usually a relatively easy snow climb though in some years there can be problems crossing the big crevasses. The expedition will go to Illimani after a program of ascents in the Cordillera Real when acclimatisation peaks of around 5000-5500m will be attempted. The regular expedition will then travel to Sajama and attempt this straightforward 6542m peak in the remote south-western desert. Sajama is the highest peak in Bolivia and will make a suitable climax to our time in Bolivia.

For those looking for a more technical challenge we have an expedition option to attempt Condoriri, a technically interesting 5648m peak, often called the 'Matterhorn of Bolivia'. We can also arrange an option to climb Ancohuma. Both of these can be either in place of Sajama or as an add on at the end of the main Sajama and Illimani expedition.

The expedition will be based in La Paz and we'll spend the first few days in and around this fascinating city until we get used to the thin air. The La Paz airport is higher than the summit of the Eiger! During this time in La Paz we will arrange some optional sightseeing trips, including the pre-Inca ruins of Tiahuanaco and Lake Titicaca.
