Technical climbing in Chilean Patagonia

Patagonia is a magical place. It is a land of outrageous scenery where huge fingers of rock jut into the sky between magnificent glaciers and giant icebergs float peacefully in ice blue lakes. In southern Chile the Torres del Paine are one of the most spectacular mountain groups in the world - three fingers of pure granite jutting into the sky.

This expedition will attempt an ascent of the north tower of Paine by what has become the normal route form the Campo Japones to the north. There are over 20 pitches of climbing starting with 300m of easy slabs up to the Col Bich, then a couple of the hardest pitches at up to 5.9/HVS/A1 to gain the South Ridge. The climbing is on generally good granite, but possibly with some snow. This will be a hard ascent in weather that can be very cold and stormy. The expedition can only be joined by those with suitable and extensive previous mountaineering experience.

We have allowed three weeks to allow us plenty of time for a good weather window in which to make the ascent. Spare time will be used for other suitable climbing objectives in the area and route preparation.
