This holiday will feature the four day La Cumbre to Coroico trek in the Cordillera Real, which descends from the high Andes at 4800m to the jungle. Also included is a longer eight day trek around Illampu in the remote northern Cordillera Real crossing several high passes of up to 5000m around this massif. Both treks offer superb mountain scenery and the chance to see loads of llamas, alpacas and wildlife.
The holiday will be based in the capital city La Paz which, at 3700m, is the worlds highest capital. La Paz is also one of the worlds most scenic cities, built up the sides of a deep canyon on the edge of the "Altiplano" (high plateau) underneath the magnificent triple peak of Illimani 6462m. We'll spend the first few days here, acclimatising and exploring the colourful markets and steep cobbled back streets. There will also be a chance to take day excursions to see Lake Titicaca and the pre-Inca ruins at Tiahuanaco.
Our first trek, the La Cumbre to Coroico trail (also known as the Choro Trail), begins in the mountains right above the city of La Paz and descends in three days to the quaint wee village of Coroico from where a spectacular and sometimes terrifying road takes us back up to La Paz. Sections of the trail are on roads built in the time of the Incas.
For our second trek we will travel to the
small village of Sorata located at the northern end of the Cordillera Real .
From here we will make the eight day circuit trek around the Illampu massif, crossing
many beautiful valleys and camping by deep blue glacial lagoons. The highlight
of this trek is the walk on the final day up to the spectacular Laguna Glaciar, where
the glaciers from Bolivia's third highest peak, Ancohuma, descend into a tiny
ice-choked lagoon at over 5000m.
