A spectacular trek in Peru with a climbing option

The circuit trek of the Cordillera Huayhuash (pronounced Why-wash) is one of the world's greatest treks. For mountain scenery and remoteness it is without equal in the Andes. Again in 2002 we will be running a slightly different circuit starting and finishing in the small town of Cajatambo at 3400m. This will allow us to avoid some of the most crowded valleys in the Huayhuash and also the area around Llamac where new roads and mines have recently been built and destroyed the wilderness experience. Those taking the climbing option will be able to climb two 5000m peaks, Suerococha 5350m and Leon Huacanan 5450m.

The Huayhuash circuit is a difficult and wild trek, crossing several high passes including one over 5000m high so a high level of fitness is recommended. The trek will be fully supported and take us a total of sixteen days, including a couple of rest days and the ascent of Suerococha.

Though previous experience of trekking and camping in remote areas are a big advantage, both the trek and climb are suitable for anyone who is both fit and adventurous. You will need to have or hire an ice-axe and crampons for the ascent of Suerococha but there is no need to have previous experience of using these prior to the expedition.
