The Club was formed
in the winter of 1874. A group of cricketers from Villa Cross
Wesleyan Chapel, Aston in Birmingham got together and decided to form a
football club to give them something to do in the winter months.
Their first game
was arranged against a Rugby side Aston St Marys. The game was played over
two halves, the one half a game of rugby the second half football.
During the next
few years Aston Villa as they were now called began to establish
themselves. They went on to win the The FA Cup three times and the league
first division five times before the turn of the century.
Their early
ground was adjacent the current Villa Park in what is now known as Aston
Park. In 1876 they moved to Perry Barr just up the road returning to Aston
at their current site in 1897.
The Club were
founding members of The Football League in 1888 and have remained
prominent members ever since.
In 1957 they won
the FA Cup for the seventh time albeit this was to be the last time they
lifted the famous trophy to date with the only flirt with the trophy
coming when they lost out in Wembley's last FA cup final in 2000
Their biggest
success came in 1982 when in Rotterdam against Bayern Munich they lifted
the biggest club trophy the European Cup. In 1994 and 1996 they went on to
win the League Cup for the forth and fifth time to complete their honours.
So far the new
Millennium as been dry apart from a FA Youth trophy in 2002.
