Congratulations

You have won the star prize in the UCAS lottery, a place at Grey College, University of Durham. Come October, you will be welcomed into the most friendly and amazing community and three years down the line, you like all the other finalists will just not want to leave.

One of the greatest assets of Grey College is it's sport which ranges from Ultimate Frisbee, through more obscure past-times such as Football, to what brings you to this site, Rubgy.

I have tried to paint a picture of Grey Rugby below but should you want any more information or advise regarding Grey or Rugby at Durham, I would be happy to help, and you can find my contact details here.

If you have played rugby before:

Things Kick Off in a Post-Exams 7's Tournament

You may be wondering what standard of rugby is played at Grey or in this new concept, the ‘Inter Collegiate’ competitions. I was thinking the very same, in fact I was wondering whether I would play rugby at all at Durham.

When I turned up, I was welcomed into a setup with such talent, dedication, drive and ambition, that any doubts I had quickly turned into a new found passion for the game.

Most first team players have played at a respectable level, ranging from School 1st XV’s through to County and District representative honours.

We play good, hard but most importantly enjoyable rugby. If you want the first two, but not enjoyment, the University Rugby website can be found here.

If you are a novice or have never seen a rugby ball:

A rugby ball. There is no excuse now

This is for you. This season, Grey College RFC is expanding to include a full B-Team setup playing regularly, and for the first time in Grey History, entering the Floodlit Cup and League competitions along side the 1st XV. There will also be more ‘social’ fixtures against like opposition, for our less sport orientated members to have a run around if they so wish.

I hold the view that rugby unites, educates and entertains, and the whole rugby setup should be open to anyone and everyone. No matter how much of a butter fingers you are, no matter how unfit you got on your Gap Year, no matter how much you don’t think Rugby is for you, I know that Grey College RFC can offer something to you. I’m pretty sure just from the fact you have paid this much of an interest that you can offer something to us.

Social Side

Pre-tour social. Set us up nicely for an 8 hour coach journey.

As feared and envied as our rugby is it wouldn’t even be on the same scale if it wasn’t for our social side and squad unity this provides. I stand by the claim that Grey has the most diverse and again feared/envied social setup in Durham. Whether you want to want a quiet drink in the bar, to organise a College wide American Football tournament, (it’s been done) or obviously the legendary nights of complete excess, the social side is as wide and varied as the rugby side.

But don’t take my word for it. Just ask around in Freshers week, and see for yourself. I am a Freshers Helper this year, so I look forward to seeing you in October. If you are feeling lonely, come and buy me a drink in the bar, and I’ll sort you out.

Best wishes for the rest of the summer
