Beginners Courses

When are beginners courses held?

Courses are held throughout the year, usually whenever a group of about half-a-dozen people has expressed an interest in taking part. Courses are normally held during the Club’s Saturday afternoon sessions between 2pm and 4pm.

What does the course cover?

Courses last six weeks and cover shooting with recurve bows. The basic techniques of shooting are taught, including bow assembly, as well as scoring and competition rules. Particular importance is placed on safety matters.

What does it cost?

The cost of a six week course is currently about £35 per person, which covers all coaching and the hire of equipment. The fee is payable in full at the start of the first lesson.

Is there an age limit?

There is no minimum age limit for joining a beginners course or becoming a member of the Club. We do, however, insist that children are accompanied by an adult at all times. There is no upper age limit!

What do I need to bring?

If shooting is indoors, please wear trainers with light-coloured soles that will not mark the gym floor. Shirts, blouses and other upper body clothing should not be so loose that they catch the bow string on release. All the specialised archery equipment - bows, arrows, quivers, tabs and bracers - will be provided by the Club.

What happens when I complete the beginners course?

Once you have successfully completed the beginners' course, you may be eligible to take out membership of the Club (which is only granted at the discretion of the Committee and also depends upon numbers already in the Club), and to shoot with the other members. There is no guarantee that you will be able to join the Club. Guidance and coaching will continue to be available from the more experienced members and from the Club coach.

Buying your first bow

Archery equipment can be very personal - bows and arrows come in many sizes and in different qualities. You are encouraged to invest in your own equipment when you decide to commit yourself to continuing with the sport after completing the beginners course. Club members and the Club coach will advise you on the type of equipment to buy and on the sizes that are likely to suit you best.

Who do I contact to enrol on a beginners course?

To register your interest in joining a course, contact us by e-mail, including a home telephone number if possible, at Enquiries@phoenixbowmen.org.uk.
