Taster Sessions

The Club runs taster sessions before its beginners courses for people who wish to try out the sport before signing up for the full course.

The next taster sessions will be held during our club nights on 20 and 27 January 2010, ahead of the next beginners course which starts on 3 February 2010. The full course last for 10 weeks and is designed to teach new fencers the basic techniques of foil fencing, the rules of the sport and, most importantly, how to fence safely. At the end of the course, fencers take the test for the British Fencing Association (BFA) Foil Achievement Award Level 1, a qualification recognised by all British fencing organisations. For further details, go to our Beginners Courses page.

What does it cost?

The taster session fee is £5.00 for all fencers, which is payable at the start of the session.

What does the taster session include?
  • An hour-and-a-half lesson with a BFA qualified coach
  • All equipment hire (mask, jacket, underplastron and foil)
There is a maximum of 14 fencers on all sessions.

Are there any restrictions?

The minimum age for participants is 12 years and all fencers aged under 18 years must be accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult to comply with our Child Protection Policy. There is no upper age limit!

What do I need to bring?

Fencers should wear trainers with light-coloured soles that will not mark the gym floor. They should also wear tough, loose-fitting trousers such as jeans or tracksuit bottoms that will allow them to stretch. Pockets on trousers should be zipped up or taped over while fencing to prevent them catching blades.

How do I sign up for a taster session?

If you would like to enrol on one of our taster sessions, or would like further details, please complete the form below and send it to us, indicating which date(s) you are interested in. We will then confirm your place on the session and will provide any other information that you have requested. Replies will be sent by e-mail unless you specify otherwise.

How do I sign up for a beginners course?

You may sign up for a beginners course by paying the balance of the deposit after the taster session, or by sending it through the post afterwards. If you decide to join the course later, please let us know that you wish to take part by completing the form on our Beginners Courses page. You may of course sign up for a beginners course without attending a taster session. In this case, please go to our Beginners Courses page now and complete the form there.
