SUSAN HUFTON

Susan Hufton first studied calligraphy as part of her B.Ed. honours degree at the Roehampton Institute of Higher Education and later returned there for three years' full-time study in calligraphy and bookbinding. She was then awarded a Crafts Council advanced training grant to study lettercarving. In 1987 she was elected a Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators. She is the author of Step-by Step Calligraphy (Weidenfeld and Nicolson 1995), is featured in Calligraphy Masterclass (Collins 1990) and contributed to The Calligrapher's Project Book (Collins 1987). She combines commissioned work with teaching calligraphy and is currently editor of 'The Scribe' (Journal of the SSI).

PATRICIA GIDNEY

Patricia Gidney studied at Medway College of Art and later moved on to specialise in calligraphy and bookbinding for three years full-time at Roehampton Institute. Since 1984 she has worked with Gerald Fleuss as a freelance designer. Patricia is the author of Handwriting: Everyone's Art - Making Journals (The Edward Johnston Foundation and Ditchling Museum 1999). She has recently completed a series of botanical illustrations which were commissioned as greetings card and bookmark designs and collaborated on hand-drawn maps for The Safeguard of the Sea by NAM Rodger (HarperCollins 1997) She has contributed to The Calligrapher's Project Book and Practical Calligraphy (Hamlyn 1991) and has taught calligraphy and illumination at many workshops and residential courses.

GERALD FLEUSS

Gerald Fleuss worked for a time for the lettercarver David Kindersley before studying calligraphy and bookbinding full-time at Roehampton and returning to teach there for the next ten years. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators in 1982, a member of the Art Workers' Guild in 1983 and served as Honorary Designer of the Wynkyn de Worde Society for 1998. He is the co-author(with John Nash) of Practical Calligraphy (Hamlyn 1991), was featured in Calligraphy Masterclass and contributed to The Calligrapher's Project Book. His work is included in public collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Houghton Library, Harvard University.
