MUMBLES HILL NATURE RESERVE In 1991 the Mumbles Hill was designated a Local Nature Reserve to protect its value for wildlife and to enable more people to enjoy the area. It is in the old part of the village with the original fishermans cottages built on its lower slopes. Although not large in area, the reserve has a variety of natural habitats including maritime, heath, limestone, grassland, scrub and woodland. Its migratory birds include garden warblers, house martins and swallows, while many resident bird species such as skylark, green woodpecker and jay are also seen. There are badgers, squirrels, rabbits and foxes living on the hill. Thanks to the peninsula shape of the Mumbles Hill, the footpaths criss-crossing it offer wonderful views of Mumbles Village, Oystermouth Castle, Swansea Bay, Mumbles Pier and Lighthouse, Bracelet and Limeslade Bays across the Bristol Channel to North Devon and along the points of the south Gower Peninsula. In the middle of the hill is a large old detached house now known as Mumbles Hill House. Originally built as a pub in 1849 it has been added to and altered over the years and is now a very fine private home with self contained flat. An eight-ten minute walk will take you into the village, the Pier, Limeslade or Bracelet Bay. Rotherslade and Langland Bays are also nearby. Walking back up past the George Hotel or via Village Lane and Thistleboon Road takes a little longer ! If you know The Mumbles you will know of its reputation as a friendly, informal and relaxed area to be. Our stunning scenery, wonderful sandy beaches and cliff path walks are timeless. Situated on the beautiful Gower Peninsula .Britains first designated area of "Outstanding Natural Beauty and with Swansea City on our doorstep.
