BIOGRAPHY

London born Jonathan Benton is an exciting young baritone whose career is rapidly advancing. A recent graduate of the prestigious Exegete School of singing and Opera Studies (Shrewsbury, Shropshire), he has sung many chorus parts for various companies most noticeably Carl Rosa as well as two principle roles for Welsh company Opera Box.

Born in London in 1970, Jonathan first became interested in making Opera a career in 1995. He studied at the Exegete School of Singing and Opera Studies in Shropshire, working regularly with Derek Hammond-Stroud OBE and also with his father, Jeffrey, the distinguished concert singer and translator of Lieder.

Jonathan's interest in English song and Lieder is also important to him and he is in demand by music societies throughout the United Kingdom in this field. He also performs regularly on the operatic concert platform

Oratorio and concert work is also included in Jonathan’s active repertoire. He has performed the baritone solos in Mozart’s Requiem , Händel’s Messiah and Haydn's Nelson Mass, and has performed Schumann’s Dichterliebe and Schubert's Winterreise in recitals around the country.

In addition to his training in Shropshire and London, Jonathan took part in a residential course in performing arts and opera studies and workshop with the Opera School of Wales and explored German Lieder in Vienna. He has worked with many of the country's most renowned operatic performers, directors and conductors including Gillian Knight, John Ramsley, Peter Mulloy, Wyn Davies, Christopher Blades, Barry Clark, Eric Roberts, Fraser Goulding, Donald Stevenson and Brendan Wheatley. Currently, Jonathan resides in Shropshire and continues his vocal study with Derek Hammond-Stroud.
