Section 3 - Asian Handicap
Imagine a football match where one side appears to be superior to another, both in strength and in general betting odds, and the outcome seems a foregone conclusion.
An example could be Man. Utd v. Blackburn in a cup match. The normal betting odds might be Man. Utd - 1/4, Blackburn - 11/2, Draw - 5/1. A bet on Man.Utd at these odds is not very attractive, especially in a cup match where upsets do happen, yet a bet on Blackburn or the Draw is a bigger risk regardless of the price.
The ASIAN HANDICAP is a bet that evens up the match to a certain extent. It is based on the idea that the teams start the match with a handicap.
There is a Single handicap and a Double handicap.
Handicap:- ' 0.5 '
eg. Liverpool ( -0.5 ) 1.95 .v. Everton ( +0.5 ) 1.85
The handicap is the figure in brackets and the next number is the price offered. In this case Liverpool are -1/2 a goal at the start and Everton + 1/2 a goal at the start.
So if you bet on Liverpool to win -- you win if Liverpool win.
If you bet on Everton to win -- you win if Everton win or draw.
Handicap:- ' 0 '
If the team you bet on wins -- you win. If it is a draw -- there is no difference in goals, so you get your stake back.
Handicap:- ' 1 ' ( i.e. -1 or +1 )
If you pick the team with ( -1 ) handicap -- you win if your team wins by 2 or more goals. If your team wins by only 1 goal -- you get your stake money back.
If you pick the team with ( +1 ) handicap -- you win if your team wins or draws the match. If it loses by only 1 goal -- you get your stake money back.
Handicap:- ' 1.5 ' ( i.e. -1.5 or +1.5 )
If you pick the team with ( -1.5 ) handicap -- you win if your team wins by 2 or more goals.
If you pick the other team with ( +1.5 ) handicap -- you win if your team wins or draws, and you also win if your team only loses by 1 goal.
Handicap:- ' 2 ' ( i.e. -2 or +2 )
If you bet on the team with ( -2 ) handicap -- you win if your team wins by 3 or more goals. If they win by only 2 goals -- you get your stake money back.
If you pick the team with ( +2 ) handicap -- you win if they win or draw. You win if they only lose by 1 goal. If they lose by only 2 goals -- you get your stake money back.
Handicap:- ' 2.5 ' ( i.e. -2.5 or +2.5 )
If you choose the team with ( -2.5 ) handicap -- you win if your team wins by 3 or more goals.
If you choose the other team at ( +2.5 ) handicap -- you win if your team wins or draws. You also win if your team loses by less than 3 goals.

Obviously, the handicaps get bigger -- depending on the strength of one team against the other, but the principle when calculating is the same as above.
This is not a bet on two matches, but instead a bet where the stake money is divided in two and gives you more options.
Eg. Denmark ( -1/2, -1 ) .v. Slovakia ( +1/2, +1 )
In this case, if you bet on Denmark -- half your stake is placed on Denmark with ( -1/2 ) goal and the other half of your stake is placed on Denmark with ( -1 ) goal at the start of the match.
A bet on Slovakia is - half your stake placed with ( +1/2 ) a goal and half your stake at ( +1 ) goal.
Double Handicap:- ' 0 ', ' 0.5 '
If you pick the team with the ( 0, -0.5 ) handicap -- you win if your team wins by 1 goal or more. If the match is a draw -- you lose half your stake.
If you pick the other team ( 0, +0.5 ) handicap -- you win if your team wins. If the match is a draw -- you win the .. stake x half the net odds of the bet.
Double Handicap:- ' 0.5 ', ' 1 '
If you pick the team with the ( -0.5, -1 ) handicap -- you win if your team wins by 2 or more goals. If it wins by 1 goal -- you win the .. stake x half the net odds of the bet.
If you pick the team with ( +0.5, +1 ) handicap -- you win if your team wins or the match is a draw. If they lose by 1 goal -- you lose half your stake.
Double Handicap:- ' 1 ', ' 1.5 '
If you pick the team with the ( -1, -1.5 ) handicap -- you win if your team wins by 2 or more goals.If they win by 1 goal -- you lose half your stake.
If you choose the other team with the ( +1, +1.5 ) handicap -- you win if your team wins or draws the match. If your team loses by only 1 goal -- you win your .. stake x half the net odds of the bet.
Double Handicap:- ' 1.5 ' , ' 2 '
If you pick the team with the ( -1.5, -2 ) handicap -- you win if your team wins by 3 or more goals. If they win by 2 goals -- you win the .. stake x half the net odds of the bet.
If you pick the other team at ( +1.5, +2 ) handicap -- you win if your team wins or draws the match. You win if they lose by only 1 goal. If they lose by 2 goals -- you win the .. stake x half the net odds of the bet.
Double Handicap:- ' 2 ' , ' 2.5 '
If you choose the team with the ( -2, -2.5 ) handicap -- you win if they win by 3 or more goals. If they win by only 2 goals -- you lose half your stake.
If you choose the other team at ( +2, +2.5 ) handicap -- you win if your team wins or it is a draw. You win if they lose by only 1 goal. If they lose by 2 goals only -- you win your .. stake x half the net odds of the bet.

Again the handicaps get bigger depending on the strength of the teams.
This is an interesting way to use handicaps in football betting and certainly creates a position where you can now bet on a match or matches with a chance of making a profit, or not losing as much or even getting your stake money back -- depending on the result in goal terms.
