BET DESCRIPTIONS
WIN -------A WIN bet is one in which the selection chosen must WIN the event.
PLACE----A place bet is one in which the selction must be placed in the event (to place means to finish 1st or 2nd : 1st, 2nd or 3rd : 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th : and in some cases 1st, 2nd, 3rd,4th or 5th, depending on the size of the field in the event and the bookmakers rules).
EACH WAY----An each way (EW) bet is in fact two bets on the same selection. The first bet is to WIN the event and the second bet to place in that event.
-----------------------------
WIN SINGLE = 1 bet eg. £1 WIN on selection 'A' = £1 STAKE (selection 'A' must WIN to get a return).
PLACE SINGLE = 1 bet eg. £5 place on selection 'K' = £5 STAKE (selection 'K' must be placed).
EACH WAY SINGLE = 2 bets eg. £20 ew on selection 'B' = £40 STAKE (selection 'B' must either WIN the event or at least finish in a place position in order to get a return. If your selection WINs, you will be paid the WIN bet and the PLACE bet in an each way bet).
Odds for the place part of the bet are usually determined by the size of the field. Some bookmakers differ but generally in dog or horse racing, when the race has 5 to 7 runners then 1/4 odds a place applies. 8+ runners (in non-handicaps) then 1/5 odds applies a place 1st, 2nd and 3rd. In 8 to 11 runner handicaps 1/5 odds applies for a place on 1st, 2nd and 3rd. In handicaps with 12 to 15 runners then 1/4 odds a place applies on 1st, 2nd and 3rd. In handicaps with 16 or more runners then 1/4 odds a place applies on 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed.
Some bookmakers offer different odds on certain races or events, such as the Cheltenham Festival, where they might pay 1/4 odds on all races at the three day meeting, regardless of the type of race or the amount of runners in a race.
Betting each way on events such as Snooker, Darts, some Football and other competitions, where they come down to a final, may only pay out on the first two places. Sometimes at 1/2 odds 1st or 2nd, or 1/3 odds 1st or 2nd, for the place part of the bet.
