Section 1 - Introduction
FOOTBALL BETTING OPPORTUNITIES
There are many ways to bet on football. One of the first methods, before betting offices were even thought about, was the Treble Chance --- the Football Pools. It offered a chance to win a large amount of money for a very small outlay and it still does now. Probably, it offers the best value for your money than any other form of gambling, because the stake units are extremely low, with the possibility of becoming a millionaire, although the actual odds of achieving this will tell a different story.
Since betting offices opened, however, the types of bets available on football have increased over the years, to such an extent that one could open a bookmakers and offer football bets only and make a good living. Betting with bookmakers is made on a fixed odds basis, that is the odds are compiled beforehand and offered to the customer on coupons, on screens in the betting offices, through advertisements in the media and via the internet.
Spread betting on football offers so many possibilities, and a completely different way to bet on the outcome of matches and occurences in matches, that it is best dealt with in the spread betting section.
FIXED ODDS
Most bookmakers offer fixed odds coupons for midweek and weekend matches in the English and Scottish football leagues. Some also have coupons for the Australian football in May, June, July and August. On these coupons, different bets are available, and the odds are offered for the home team to win, away team to win and both teams to draw.
LONG LIST
Weekend and Midweek Coupons
Singles and Doubles --- allowed only on cup matches or some televised matches.
Trebles and Fourfolds --- allowed on homes, aways and/or draws. You can mix them.
Fivefold accumulators and upwards --- homes, aways and draws accepted. You can mix them if you like. Maximum 5 draws allowed in any accumulator.
Permutations --- you can, for example, select 7 matches and do a perm of 21 x fivefolds, 7 x sixfolds, and 1 sevenfold accumulator --- a total of 29 bets. When cup matches are being played and singles and upwards are allowed on coupons, then most bets are accomodated -- patents, trixies, yankees, etc.
-------------
SECTIONS LISTA part of the coupon where a reduced number of the matches from the long list is printed. These matches are divided into sections, and the idea is to select 1 from each section, or 2 from each section, or 3 from each section to make accumulators. Each section, going down the coupon, appears to become a little more difficult to predict the outcome.
-------------
HANDICAP LIST
This is usually a short list of 10 - 12 matches, in which the away team is given an imaginary 1 goal start. The odds on the matches are adjusted accordingly. You have to predict 3 or more results (home and/or away and/or draw) from this section.
-------------
TREBLES LIST
A section on some coupons where you have to predict 3 or more results (home and/or away and/or draw ) from bookmakers selected top games.
--------------
HALF TIME/FULL TIME
A bet on matches in which you have to predict the half time result and the full time result. That is, you have to nominate whether the home team is leading at half time, the away team is leading at half time or a draw at half time ---- and you also have to predict the full time result ( home, away or draw ). The odds for forecasting half time/full time results in matches are obviously bigger. Usually these can be bet in singles and upwards.
Some bookmakers offer sections on their coupons, in which you can predict the half time result only---trebles and upwards.
Top of Page Singles and upwards accepted on this bet. You have to predict the correct score at the end of full time -- 90 minutes. (eg. 1 - 0, 2 - 2, 1 - 4, etc. ). Bookmakers usually advertise the odds for televised matches on their coupons etc., but you can bet on the correct score in other matches being played, and the odds are found on the reverse of most coupons.
The odds for the correct score are relative to the odds quoted for the team you are betting on to win, i.e. -- a team might be at odds of 6/4 to win a game, and if you want to bet that this team will win 3 - 0, then the odds for this might be 25/1. Another team might be 1/3 to win their game, but the odds to win 3 - 0 are only 7/1. The more likely a team is to win its game, the shorter the odds on the correct score.
--------------
FIRST OR LAST GOALSCORER
First goalscorer is more common than last goalscorer but the same rules apply to both. Odds are offered by bookmakers on the first scorer in a game. Sometimes odds are offered on the first scorer for a specific side in matches which are deemed very one sided -- usually one or two international matches.( Own goals don't usually count ).
Singles or upwards are accepted in first or last goalscorer bets, however in multiple bets ( doubles and upwards ), selections must, of course, be from different matches.
-------------
1ST SCORER/CORRECT SCORE
Singles only are allowed on this bet, unless a bookmaker allows you to do otherwise. The idea is to predict --- the name of the first player to score in a game and the correct score of that game at the end of 90 minutes ( full time ). Odds are usually compiled on this bet for some televised matches, most internationals and other selected matches.
-------------
PLAYERS LIST
Singles and upwards accepted. Some bookmakers offer this bet. A coupon is printed with the names of some of the players/strikers from quite a lot of the matches -- generally weekend games. The idea is to select a player to score in a match at any time in the game. You can pick more than one player from any of the matches listed and do mixed and accumulative bets if you like.
--------------
Several types of bet are available in these categories.
Ante-post betting --- This is a bet on the outcome of an event in which the result will not be known for a long time. Betting ante-post on football is slightly different from horse racing, in that there are not likely to be any non-runners. Consequently, your bet is likely to 'go the distance', as it were, at least until your selection is knocked out of a tournament or has not played well enough to have any more chance of winning or being placed in a league.
League -- Singles --- you can bet win or each way on a team or teams to finish 1st, 2nd, 3rd and sometimes 4th in the football leagues.
You can do multiple bets on teams in leagues -- but they must be from different divisions. Quite often, these days, odds are quoted on leagues and divisions from different countries, giving you a bigger choice to bet on, so increasing your chances of winning long term ante-post bets.
Tournaments -- In some of the major competitions, egs. European Cup (Champions League), World Cup, Euro 2000, etc., the initial stages are set up in mini leagues, where the winner or first two qualify for the latter parts of the tournaments. Bets can be placed on the winners and sometimes the first two of these mini leagues (depending on the amount of teams in a league).
Of course, you can also bet on the outcome of the tournament itself -- odds are always quoted well in advance on competitions like the World Cup --- usually 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.
In a lot of the competitions, both national and international, quite a few of the aforementioned bets are available -- First and last goalscorer, correct score, half time/full time, 1st scorer/correct score.
-------------
NOTE
Multiple bets --- You can, if you wish, mix some of the types of bet when doing a multiple bet. An example of this when playing on the same day or the following few days when odds are quoted:-
£1 Canadian
Man. City to win .v. Leicester. (fa cup game)@6/4
A.Cole (1st goalscorer-M.utd .v. Spurs) @ 5/1
Celtic to win 2-0 .v. Rangers @ 10/1
Barcelona h/t-- Barcelona f/t (.v.R. Madrid) @ 7/4 -- (TV game)
T Henman to win (.v.P.Sampras) @ 4/1
You will notice that a tennis match is included. This is to show you that you can also mix your events. You could even include some horses or greyhounds you fancy. This gives you more flexibility when placing your bet.
