FOOTBALL BETTING

Section 2 - FOOTBALL POOLS

TREBLE CHANCE

The purpose of this football bet is to predict 8 score draws from the long list of 49 matches on the football coupon supplied by one of the football pools companies. Winnings are declared in the form of dividends based on a points system. Payments are made from the total moneys invested each week --- after costs and tax have been deducted. The pool of prize money is divided between the amount of correct 1st dividends, 2nd dividends and so on. The actual percentages of prize funds and allocations of prizes to dividends are as per the football pools companies rules.

To bet on the treble chance -- you must mark -- 'X' , opposite your selected matches that you think will be score draws.

Points are awarded according to the results of these 49 matches usually played on a Saturday as follows:-

Score draw (1-1,2-2, etc.) --- 3pts

No score draw (0-0) ---------- 2pts

Void game ---------------------- 2pts

Home win or Away win ------ 1pt

Max. points-1st dividend = 24 ( 8 x 3) --- when 8 or more score draws.

2nd div = 23 (7 x 3, 1 x 2)

3rd div = 22 (7 x 3, 1 x 1) or (6 x 3, 2 x 2)

4th div = 21 (6 x 3, 1 x 2, 1 x 1) or (5 x 3, 3 x 2)

When there are less than 8 score draws, then the 1st dividend is calculated on the maximum points available. Not all companies pay out four dividends, sometimes it is 5 divs., sometimes it is 3 divs. You must check the rules according to the company you bet with.

Costs vary, but stake units start from 1/8th penny per line, to 1 and 1/3 pennies (i.e. 4/3pence)per line.

Obviously, because the unit stakes are so small and there is no such currency unit of eg. 1/8th penny, then perms are used to combine your bets, such as -- Full cover perms, and also plans devised by some newspapers and the football companies themselves. Of course you can do single lines on some coupons but there might be a minimum stake per single line of eight selections. The purpose, in theory, for doing full cover perms and plans -- is to save you writing out ridiculous amounts of seperate lines of eight selections.

Also, by selecting a larger amount of selections, you have a better chance of capturing the required score draws needed to win the pools.

Full cover perms.

These gaurantee that if there are 8 score draws among your selections you will win a 1st dividend. If, for instance, you choose 12 matches from the 49 on the coupon, and perm them in an --- 'Any 8 from 12 Full Cover Perm' , then if 8 of the 12 are score draws, you have a 1st dividend, plus you would also have minor dividends.

Of course, you can also win more than one 1st dividend. If you had selected 12 matches in a full cover perm, and 10 of these matches resulted in score draws, then you would win 45 1st dividends plus many minor dividends. Some weeks, when there are lots of score draws on the coupon, then some of the minor dividends are cancelled because there are many winners of the top prize.

Examples of popular full cover perms:-

Any --- 8 from 10 = 45 lines.

8 from 11 = 165 lines.

8 from 12 = 495 lines.

8 from 13 = 1287 lines.

8 from 14 = 3003 lines.

8 from 15 = 6435 lines.

If you multiply the number of lines by the unit stake per line, i.e. 1/8 penny, etc., then you can calculate the cost of each full cover perm. As these are popular bets, the coupons have these and more plans pre-printed, with the instructions and total stakes, to make it easier for you and them. Also, look at the Numbers Calculations page on the website, to see how you can calculate other possible full cover perms.

Other plans

Many of the newspapers offer plans as do the pools companies, other than full cover perms, in order to capture those elusive score draws. Most of these set plans involve -- from 12 selections up to 30 selections, some of them with good guarantees. These are not full cover perms, so even with 8 score draws among your selections, you might not win the 1st dividend, but on the other hand -- you might, but you should win some minor dividends. A good point to remember here, is that sometimes when there are 8 score draws --- the top dividend of 24pts is not always won, because no-one has selected the correct matches. In this case the prize moneys are paid out on the next highest points available -- be they 23pts, 22pts etc., so you could still win the million or whatever the top prize is that week, or a share of it. Consequently, by doing plans, you can cover many more matches at a reasonable cost.

Several plans will guarantee :-

If you have 9 score draws in your selections - then you will have at least 1 line with 8(i.e. 24pts).

Some guarantee :-

If you have 8 score draws in your selections - then at least 1 line will have 7 score draws.

There are so many different plans, that it is impossible to give you details or their guarantees here, but you can always write or telephone to the relevant newspapers or better still the football pools companies and ask them to send you the ones you want, so you can check your pools yourself. Of course, you can do your own permutations on the coupon - but not all companies have this facility on their coupons anymore -- more's the pity.

Some companies offer a half-time prize at no extra cost. That is, from your selected matches in your treble chance bet, if 8 are score draws at half-time then you will win the half-time jackpot, or part of it, if shared with other winners. This jackpot is paid out of the initial pool of money invested on the treble chance. The points system is the same as the treble chance.

Also, there is a high-score jackpot, based on the result at full time. This again is at no extra cost and is paid for from the initial treble chance pool. From your selected matches, for the treble chance, if the scores in some of them are high scoring, 5 goals or more, i.e. 2 - 3, 4 - 3, 0 - 5, 4 - 1, etc, at the end of a match, then your best 8 will count for the high-score jackpot,or a share of it. Of course, you could have more lines correct if you had 9 or 10 high-scores.

Another prize is the super-draws, again at no extra cost. If your selections on the treble chance include 8 high score draws, i.e. 2 - 2, 3 - 3, 4 - 4 etc., then you could win a million or a share of it.

HOMES

Some football companies offer bets on home matches. You must select maybe 9 homes, that is teams to win that are playing at their own ground. The amount of homes required sometimes changes, depending on which football leagues are on the coupons. In the summer time the pools companies cover the Australian football matches (i.e. soccer, not Australian Rules). These matches can be very high scoring, sometimes providing lots of home wins, yet other times providing many away wins. Draws can be scarce some weeks.

When the English and Scottish leagues are on the coupons, then maybe only 8 homes are required. Always check what a company is offering, as the bets may alter.

To bet on the homes, --- you must mark -- '1' -- opposite the selections you think will be home wins.

When betting on 9 home matches, you can select from the long list sometimes on the reverse of the coupon. There is usually a minimum and a maximum unit stake per line of 9 selections. This could be 10p min., and £1 max. Payment of winnings is made from the home win pool.

You can do permutations. -- Some newspapers offer perms for home and away matches. Otherwise, you can devise your own perms, as long as the company can understand the instructions and the correct payment is made for the total bet.

Examples of perms for 9 homes:-

Full cover egs:-

(i) 10 sels. --- Perm any 9 from 10 homes to make -- 10 lines of 9 homes at 50p per line = 10 x 50p = £5 total stake. (Total bets = 10)

(ii) 11 sels. --- Perm any 9 from 11 homes to make -- 55 lines of 9 homes at 10p per line = 55 x 10p = £5 - 50 total stake.

Example of a plan:-

Select 18 matches you think will be home wins from the list of 49. Put them into groups of 3. ( eg. nos. 2,4,5 / 7,9,11 / 16,17,22 / 23,24,28 / 33,35,41 / 44,45,48 )

Write these instructions alongside.

Perm any 3 groups of 3 homes from the 6 groups, to make 20 lines of 9 homes at 40p per line = 20 x 40p = £8 - 00 total stake.

In the example above, in order to win -- at least 3 of your groups must be correct. (the 3 selections in each group must win)

AWAYS

Some companies offer bets on away wins. Again the amount of aways varies on coupons, depending on which leagues are playing, but usually it is 6. An away win is a win for a team playing at another teams' ground.

To bet on aways, --- you must mark -- '2' -- opposite the selections you think will be away wins.

When betting on aways, you must make your selections from a short list on the reverse of the coupon. Unit stakes -- minimum and maximum are as home wins. Payment of winnings is made from the away win pool. You can do perms and plans to try and capture the away wins.

Examples of perms for 6 aways:-

Full cover egs:-

(i) 8 sels. --- Perm any 6 from 8 aways to make --- 28 lines of 6 aways at 30p per line = 28 x 30p = £8 - 40 total stake.

(ii) 10 sels. --- Perm any 6 from 10 aways to make --- 210 lines of 6 aways at 10p per line = £21 - 00 total stake.

Examples of plans:-

(a) Select 14 matches from the list that you think will be away wins. Put them into pairs.(eg. 1,3 / 7,8 / 13,19 / 20,23 / 27,31 / 38,41 / 42,48)

Write these instructions alongside:-

Perm any 3 pairs from 7 pairs of aways, to make 35 lines of 6 aways at 20p line = 35 x 20p = £7 total stake.

(b) Select 3 teams as away bankers, and another 8 teams you think will be away wins.

Mark your 3 banker aways in the 1st column and write banker on the same line of each selection. In the next column -- enter your other 8 selections, then write alongside, your instructions:-

Perm any 3 from 8 aways in 2nd column with the 3 bankers in the 1st column, to make 56 lines of 6 aways at 20p per line = £11 - 20 total stake.

4 DRAWS

This is another bet, also found on the reverse of some coupons. You must mark -- 'X'-- opposite the matches you think will be draws at full time. These can be score draws or no-score draws. Payment of winnings is made from the 4-Draws pool.

The minimum and maximum unit stakes are as the home and away pools. You can do perms and plans on the 4-Draws pools.

Examples of perms on the 4-Draws.

Full cover egs:-

(i) 6 sels. --- Perm any 4 from 6 draws to make -- 15 lines of 4 draws at 30p line = 15 x 30p = £4 - 50 total stake.

(ii) 8 sels. --- Perm any 4 from 8 draws to make -- 70 lines of 4 draws at 10p line = 70 x 10p = £7 total stake.

Plans can be made in the same way as the examples for homes and aways.

HOW TO PAY FOR AND WHERE TO DO THE POOLS

This used to be done solely by posting the coupons to the companies with a cheque or postal order inside. This can still be done.

Later, the companies started to use agents as well as the post. These agents (collectors), are sometimes shopkeepers, newsagents and other people that the companies deem honest and reliable who might go to customers houses to collect their entries and stake money. If you know of a newsagent that has the coupons or collector, you can still do the pools through them now.

Pools entries are also possible nowadays by telephoning the company and giving your football pool instructions and bank details. Keep a note of any reference number when doing the pools.

Another way to do the pools, is via the internet.

Also, of course, you can do your pools in a betting office that has a Tote terminal. To do this though, you have to mark your selections on a pre-printed tote slip, designed to accomodate most full cover perms on the treble chance. There are advantages to this method, but also disadvantages.

Advantages:-

(a) It is very quick. You can play and pay and your pools are on straight away.

(b) You can bet right up to the kick-off of the first match on the coupon on the Saturday.

(c) You can also collect your winnings from any betting office with a tote terminal, up to a certain amount, once the dividends are known -- usually on the following Wednesday afternoon.

Disadvantages:-

(a) You are limited to full cover perms, except maybe one or two plans.

(b) You can not do other permutations of full cover perms.

(c) You can not do homes, aways nor the 4-draws type of pools via these terminals.

(d) Sometimes these terminals are not working or not working properly in a betting office, and if you were relying on them, and it is now too late to bet -- it could lead to disappointment.

If you have any questions regarding perms, plans or want some general advice on football betting, then send an e-mail to settle-bet.co.uk.
