LOTTERY AND NUMBER DRAWS

LOTTERY

This is a very popular way to try and win millions for a small outlay. Lotteries are played world wide, each country or region running one, adopting the same or a similar formula. It is a numbers game. The amount of numbers in a lottery varies from country to country, depending on the size of the population and the likely participation in the game.

A comparison of this variation can be made between Ireland and the U.K. In Ireland, with a population around 6 million people, the lottery is drawn from 42 numbers and a 'go' on the lottery costs 75p. In the U.K., with a population around 60 million people, the lottery is drawn from 49 numbers and a 'go' on the lottery costs £1. It doesn't necessarily follow that everyone bets on the lottery in a country. You have to discount those under-age who are not allowed to participate. Also, a lot of pensioners do not play, either by choice or they cannot afford to play. Then, of course, a large number of people don't want to play anyway. This is the same in any country that runs a lottery.

The majority of lotteries are ones in which you mark 6 selections on one of the pre-printed game boards on a lottery slip. You can play and pay for the lottery at one of countless outlets where there is a lottery terminal. These terminals are found in some shops, superstores, garages and post offices and also many other places.

To win or share the first prize in the lottery you must have selected exactly the same 6 numbers that are drawn at random when the lottery draw takes place. A 7th ball (a bonus ball) is also drawn.

In the U.K. if you have 5 correct from the 6 balls drawn and your other selection is the bonus ball, then you win or share second prize. If you only have 5 correct and do not have the bonus ball, then you will win or share third prize. If you only have 4 numbers correct, then you win or share fourth prize. If you have 3 numbers correct, then you win £10, as long as there is enough money in the kitty.

In Ireland, first prize is paid as above, on the 1st 6 numbers drawn. Second prize, a guaranteed £7500 is paid on 5 correct plus the bonus ball. Third prize for 5 correct numbers. Fourth prize, a guaranteed £100 is paid on 4 correct plus the bonus ball. Fifth prize is paid on 4 correct numbers. If you have 3 correct and the bonus ball, you are guaranteed £15.

This information demonstrates that although lotteries are similar they are not all the same, either by numbers of balls used altogether in a lottery, or the way prize money is distributed.

BOOKIES LOTTERY BETS

Bookmakers offer bets on other aspects of lotteries from other countries. Bets have been devised to enable a person to predict some of another countries winning numbers. At the moment, in the U.K., you can have number bets on the Irish, Spanish, German and New York lotteries, and in Ireland, you can also have number bets on the British lottery.

You can bet on the 7 number draw (i.e. 6 and bonus ball), or you can bet on the 6 number draw without the bonus ball. Prices are advertised on special betting slips and on posters in some bookmakers. The prices are dependent on the total number of balls used to play a lottery - 42 in Ireland, 49 in Germany, Spain and when betting in Ireland - 49 in the U.K., and 51 in New York.

You can bet on 1 number only if you choose from the 6 or 7 number draw, and if that number is one of the randomly drawn balls in the lottery you choose to bet on, then you will be paid at the advertised odds for 1 number in that lottery. The price for 1 number in the 6 number draw will be bigger than that in the 7 number draw.

Likewise, prices are available for 2 numbers, 3 numbers, 4 numbers, and the maximum 5 numbers. You are not allowed to bet on more than 5 numbers as it infringes laws regarding the actual lottery. There are other specially printed slips with multiple bets and perms on them. You can do a Patent on 3 numbers, a Yankee on 4 numbers and a Canadian on 5 numbers, or various perms. You can do a Lucky 15 and a Lucky 31. It is certainly a different way to bet on a lottery.

RAPIDO AND 49'S

Bookmakers also offer other bets based on numbers during the mornings, at lunchtime and at teatime. The bets available are on number draws, similar to the lottery, and special betting slips are provided to make your bet. These draws are called -- Rapido and 49's.

RAPIDO

This draw is shown live via the SIS screens in the betting offices, at regular intervals, in the morning. Each Rapido draw is a new game. There is a total of 80 numbers in the draw -- nos. 1 - 80 and from these, 20 numbers will be randomly drawn.

To bet on the Rapido, you select up to 10 numbers from the 80 numbers available prior to the draw taking place and mark your selection or selections on the special Rapido betting slip and enter your stake. Advertised winning returns on the Rapido slip are calculated to a £1 stake, but your stake can be larger if you like and be paid accordingly.

The Rapido draw takes place. 20 different numbers are drawn from the original 80.

To win on the Rapido, check your selection or selections against the 20 drawn. There are different prizes for the amount of correct numbers you have. It depends on the number of selections you made when placing your bet. Your returns could range from:-

£1 for 1 correct number out of 3 selections, to £80,000 for 10 correct numbers out of the maximum 10 selections. Full details of payouts and the rules of Rapido are shown on the reverse of the special betting slip and on posters and leaflets in the betting offices.

49'S

When the 49's draw is made, if your number or numbers are in the 6 balls drawn, then you will be paid at the above odds.

Eg. If you had selected 3 numbers for the draw at £1 stake and your 3 numbers were in the 6 randomly drawn, then you would be paid £512. ( £1 @ 511/1 )

You can even do multiple bets on the 49's. Select 3 and do a Patent, or select 4 and do a Yankee, or select 5 and do a Canadian.

You can do Perm bets, choosing various amounts of numbers and combine them in doubles, trebles, fourfolds and fivefolds.

You can bet on whether the 6 numbers drawn are higher or lower than 25. If you get them all correct, you get odds of 50/1. This is called the 49's HI-LO.

Some bookmakers offer other specialty bets on the 49's draw, such as Bingo and Total Balls.

Bingo is a bet selecting 9 numbers and entering them on the special slip provided. If you manage to select 3 or more correctly and they are in the correct position on your slip, you will win various prizes-- the better the position - the better the prize.

Total Balls is a bet on the aggregate total of the numbers of the 6 balls drawn. Different odds are quoted on the ranges of numbers.

To play 49's with the Booster ball ( ball no. 7), you must choose between 1 to 5 numbers from the 49 balls in the draw and enter them on the special 49's slip in the place for the Booster entry. You must enter the time of the draw and your stake, etc, as per the rules for 49's.
