Mistakes are often made in betting offices by punters and settlers alike. A day doesn't go by in which some bets are miscalculated by someone, somewhere. Everyone makes mistakes at sometime.
Bets can be settled incorrectly for a number of reasons.
Perhaps due to --- missed non-runners.
Wrong prices used in error when calculating --- maybe 4/5 instead of 5/4, or 10/11 instead of 11/10.
Winners or placed horses crossed out inadvertantly.
Mistakes are inevitable, especially in busy shops when the results are going against the bookie. In a normal everyday busy shop, there are plenty of things going on that a manager has to deal with, eyes and ears everywhere, and the slightest distraction from the norm, can result in an error. It is not the settlers fault, but everyone blames the settler/manager or runs down the bookie when they have to query a bet.
Admittedly, with the advent of the new computers in some betting offices, settling mistakes should be a thing of the past. But it won't be, because the computers don't have all the information in them yet and all the bet details from a betting slip still has to be entered into the computer manually. Mistakes will still be made.
